The above married Ann Mason in 1810 in Skipton Yorkshire. The baptism of their first child Elizabeth on 16 Aug 1812 in Holy Trinity Church Skipton shows William as the son of Wm Cheakley of Ashford in the County of Kent.
His occupation is given as husbandman but he subsequently moved to Appleby in Westmorland to be an innkeeper at Chequers Inn, High Wiend. Lord Hothfield of Kent owned both Skipton & Appleby castles which may explain why William moved to both of these places after Kent.
Apart from Elizabeth the rest of his children were born in Appleby:-
Thomas 1814
William 1815
Mary Ann 1817 (died 1873 Earby, Yorkshire)- My 2 X Gt Grandmother
John 1820 (died 1842 Skipton, Yorkshire)
James 1823 (died 1908 Blackpool, Lancashire)
Mason 1825 (died 1843 Skipton, Yorkshire)
Eleanor 1827 (died 1903 Barnoldswick, Yorkshire)
George 1830 (died 1844 Kirby Malham, Yorkshire)
It seems that the family returned to Skipton because of ill health. William died in 1837 while Ann died in 1839 of consumption.
The family name varies in all records & some of the deaths are recorded under Checkley.
Any information would be most welcome especially the Ashford connection
