Hi
I'm looking for information on my grandfather Edwin Checkley. My
mother's maiden name was Checkley. Her father, my grandfather, Edwin L.
Checkley was born in England in May 1855. There is an unverified story in
the family that his family in England was involved with railroads (owning,
operating, working on?).He emigrated in1870 into Boston. and was
naturalized in Philadelphia in 1879. He married my grandmother, Celina
Veronica Dooley, in Brooklyn, New York in 1886 and lived there until 1904.
he then moved the family to Philadelphia where he set up a business. In
1890 he published a book that was reviewed by newspapers, medical journals,
etc on a worldwide basis. I have a copy of the book which is listed in the
Library of Congress. It was entitled "A Natural Method of Physical
Training".
He had 4 children - Edward, Arthur, Gertrude (my mother) and
Celina. I have a record of all the decendants of Gertrude, and some of
Celina & Edward.
I have found the family in the Brooklyn NY 1900 census. However, I
have not yet found his exact place of place of birth or the names of his
parents.
My mother, Gertrude Checkley, was born in 1893 and married into the
Devine surname which has been my primary area of research.
If any of this makes sense to you great.
Can you help me?
George D. Devine

HELLO EVERYBOBY,
As a way of introduction: I'm the CHECKLEY / CHECKLY / CHICHELE / CHICHELEY
PLACE surname historian registered with the Guild Of One-Name Studies,
GOONS, locate in London, England, have been researching these surnames for
the past 10 years, am a member of the New England Historical Genealogy
Society, NEHGS, located in Boston, MA., have contacted via mail and or
E-MAIl over 400 Checkley families in 10 different countries, to date,
compiled this data in my computer using the Family Origins program, provided
printouts of each family's tree, published 3 Checkley Newsletters ( the last
one concentrating on all the Checkley / Chichele / Chicheley streets,
villages / hamlets so named ) and have traced my own family back to Ireland
in the 1740s.
I also have a small 3 part web site < www.kropf.net/checkley/ >.
The Irish family of Francis Checkly a merchant consists of 3 unnamed sons,
Thomas Checkley ( Solicitor ) and Richard Checkley ( Barrister ). Richard
remained in Ireland while Richard, who is my gg grand father, with his
extensive family relocated to Canada where most of these descendents still
reside.
MY primary objective now is to trace my family, and as many others as
possible, back to England, connect them with the places we're named after,
combine as many Checkley families into as few trees as possible and above
all solicit as much help as possible in consolidating this Place Surname
research in one place ( preferably an on-line data bank ) where it will be
available to future researchers long after I've departed.
Anyone out there willing and able participate PLEASE reply.
CHARLES H. CHECKLEY
