I would LOVE to see some documentation of the information that William was the father of Thomas the Immigrant (1644) ! I've done significant research in England and in following my usual pathways to gather accurate sources of documentation, have yet to find absolute proof that William is Thomas the Immigrant's father. As for the theory that it was Humphrey Chetham, that is not correct as Humphrey Chetham was never married. Agreed that this was information found on WIkipedia and not stamped in concrete, but while looking at Lancashire Marriages on the Lancashire OPC no marriage for this particular Humphrey was listed. Again, not in concrete.
Certainly this is a genealogical investigation still in progress and I'm working on getting information Humphrey's will and a genealogical history of the Chetham family. Perhaps this will require a tripo to Lancashire, England to sort out--I hope so :).

Have you had any luck in your search? There is a lot of information out there on this line but as it goes further back, it's sketchy. I haven't researched it in awhile. Lucy Cheatham was my 4th Great grandmother. I have her going back to Thomas Cheatham who died in August of 1776. He was supposed to be the son of William who was supposed to be the son of Humphrey. I have no idea if that's accurate.
I hope you've had luck in your research :-)
Chris
