Following is circumstantial evidence to support Martin Cheatham/Chatham of Wilkes Co. N.C. being the son of Robert Cheatham of Albemarle Co. Va.:
1. Martin Chatham named a son CHARLES MOORE Chatham. Robert Cheatham's wife Milly Moore had a brother CHARLES MOORE.
2. MARTIN Chatham's first name is the same as the surname of Milly Moore's mother Judith MARTIN. This surname is common in Albemarle Co. Va. & Amherst Co. Va.
3. The History of N.C. Vols. III & IV (1928) states that Martin Chatham was born 1803 in either Augusta Co. Va. or Western Va. Robert Cheatham was listed as head of household in the 1810 Albemarle Co. Va. census, with one male under 10 years old in the household. Albemarle Co. is adjacent to Augusta Co. and both are in western Va.
4. Robert Cheatham had children by his second wife who were named William Alexander, George, Caroline & Martha. Martin Chatham had children named William, Alexander, George, Caroline & Martha Chatham.
5. Martin Chatham also named one of his sons Robert Chatham as well as two daughters Sarah & Martha. It's believed that Robert Cheatham had two daughters by Milly Moore, named Patsy (Martha) & Sarah.
6. Martin Chatham's surname on his marriage record was recorded as CHEATHAM. Robert Cheatham also married his second wife Elizabeth Turnbill in Wilkes Co. N.C.
7. Robert Cheatham's presumed sister Alice Cheatham Suddith named a son MARTIN Suddith (also born c.1800-10, like Martin Chatham).
8. Martin Chatham's presumed sister Sarah Cheatham Curry named a son MARTIN Curry.
9. Robert Cheatham's daughter by his 2nd. wife, Ann Elizabeth Cheatham Carroll, named her first son MARTIN Henry Carroll.

Sandra,
We are indeed distant cousins...Richard's daughter Sarah (or Sally) Rebecca is my grandmother's grandmother. Do you have an original copy of that photo or have you only seen it in the book? I am wondering who has the original and if they might have more. My family is in the book, however I am not, as I was born after the information was compiled. My grandmother is Gene Wilkinson and father is Ben Marshall.
Thanks for your help,
Craig Marshall

Hello...
I don't know if this will be any help to you, but, my ancestral family, the 17th century Thomas Cheathams of Henrico and Chesterfield Counties, Virginia, and several of their descendants relocated to Jefferson County, Georgia in 1805, bringing along their Virginia slaves (also named Cheatham)to acquire and occupy their 1800 and 1805 land lottery holdings there and built a lumber, paper, and timber plantation called Cheatwicke near Louisville and Wadley (and, horribly, near the Great Slave Market at Louisville. More slaves were acquired there, and surnamed Cheatham, also) The house was destroyed by Sherman in his March to the Sea during the Civil War, and the slaves were mostly driven from their homes there and left to their own resourcefulness. Many relocated to share-crop, tenant-farm and homestead in counties in south Georgia, but several left with former slave-owner Cheatham families and relocated to Alabama, Mississippi and particularly to Louisiana with them, and!
remained, working for them, for decades. They almost always retained the Cheatham surname, and do to this day. I have a list of the Cheatham slaves from Cheatwicke which predated the Civil War and emancipation. Most are just first names and their ages, however, making it extremely difficult to track their genealogy, though many genealogists are still working to complete this project. I hope this can help you in some way to complete your research. Sincerely, Cher Cheatham Haile (cher(a)mindspring.com)

The imigrant Thomas Chetham/Cheatham is my eighth great grandfather. I have read the book of which you speak at the Virginia Library, and I, too, cannot find relationship. Some have said that he was related to Humphrey Chetham, however, Humphrey appears to be a bachelor and I couldn't link Thomas up with anyone of his lineage. Would love to know your theories. It is quite a mystery. My email is timegoby(a)aol.com
