I am seeking living relatives of SM1 Earl Cheatham, who was lost at sea in 1943 aboard the US Submarine Capelin. My great uncle, Loyle Keaton, was also a crewmember. I am interested in collecting stories from surviving family members for a possible book project. If you are interested in participating, please contact me. Thank you.

Hi all!
I have a problem. My Gr-Gr Granddad, Joel Nelson Rodgers was born 5/27/1827 and married a Cheatham. Here's the problem:
My family oral tradition, headed by my Great-Aunt Wilma Rodgers, born 1906, claims that Joel Nelson Rodgers married Susan R. Cheatham,b. 1796, daughter of Thomas Cheatham, b. c1770, d. aft. 1850 and Susan Cheatham, b. c1780, d. aft. 1854.
Thomas Cheatham was the son of Archer Cheatham, b. c1743 in VA, d. c1799 in TN and Mary Bass, b. c1747 in VA. Archer was the son of James Cheatham, b. c1717 in VA.
Susan was supposed to be at least 50% Cherokee (and I've gotten into a lot of hot water with my family because of Joel's birth certificate). However, in all the Cherokee rolls, including both the Eastern, Western and Old Settlers, there is no Cheatham listed.
Terry Cheatham has Joel's birth certificate information which states that Joel Nelson is the son of John Rodgers and Elizabeth B. Cheatham. I can trace (with Terry's enormous and generous help) the Cheatham line to Great Britain - but have lost John Rodgers - there are 2 John Rodgers listed in the Cherokee rolls, so perhaps that's the Cherokee connection. But I digress.
The family is insisting that the Joel Nelson is the son of Susan. There is no record ANYWHERE in our family records of an Elizabeth, but several notes about Susan. I understand that Elizabeth may have been nicknamed Susan but that doesn't help me. The problem that I have encountered (besides my family's insistence) is that KY did not issue birth certificates until after 1852 - which means that Joel Nelson Rodgers may or may not have requested a birth certificate. The birth certificate may have been requested after his death and the information given may have been wrong or recorded incorrectly.
Does anyone have any information that could help me solve this problem? I don't really know where to go next - and my family is kind of making camps (my camp is very small) with regard to Elizabeth and Susan! ARGH!

Nancy,
I am still here. We are cousins!!! I know little or nothing about my biological fathers' family. Ernest was my father, however, I never met him. He and my mother divorced just before my first birthday and had separated before she knew she was pregnant. Any information you have and are willing to share I would love to receive. My e-mail address is: sissie(a)train.missouri.org. Telephone # is 417-967-4696.
Thanks so much for responding
Lynn
