As I've previously indicated, I believe Polly was the dau. of Samuel Cheatham & his wife Sarah. Samuel purchased 400 acres in Lunenburg Co. Va. in 1783 and was still residing there in 1800. I have not been able to find any "absolute proof" that Polly was Samuel's dau. however the fact that they named their first son SAMUEL CHEATHAM Smithson is significant.
Polly appears to have had siblings Samuel, Betsy, Sarah & Nancy. Samuel married Elizabeth Keeton in 1800 (bond by Warner Keeton & married by minister Matthew Dance). Betsy married Charles Smithson in 1800 (bond by Samuel Cheatham). Sarah married Joseph Keeton in 1803 (bond by Warner Keeton & married by minister Matthew Dance). Nancy married Nicholas Smithson in 1807 (bond by Nathaniel Smithson & married by minister James Shelburne). Matthew Dance also married Polly Cheatham & Nathaniel B. Smithson.
Samuel Cheatham Smithson's younger siblings were Tandy S., Charlotte, Martha, Catherine K., Charles W., Nathaniel B. Jr., William J., Coleman G. & Mary "Polly" Smithson. Let me know if you need any further details on them. You indicated that Nathaniel B. Smithson was a Rev. Soldier, but I don't see how that's possible if he was born in 1773?
If anyone else out there has any theories on Polly Cheatham's parentage, I'd be very interested in hearing them.

The Newton and Lemuel Cheathams kept ringing a bell, so I checked in my notes. There are some references for both names.
1. Look into Milton County Census, 1860. There is a Newton, age 22; Thomas, age 19; Lemuel, age 18.
Their parents are John W. and Rhoda Cheatham.
searches1.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/archives/ga/milton/census/1860/1860cens.txt
2. Madison County 1870 Census lists a Newton Cheatham for the first time in that county, age 18.
3. "Madison County Probate Records" call #, GR 929.3
a)"Guardian Bond Book 1856 - 1865, p10"
My Isham or John Isham is found in the Guardian Bond Book. Possibly he became a guardian for Newton.
b)"Subpoena Docket, Superior Court, 1851-1859, p 92"
There is a reference to a Lemuel Cheatham.
4. Madison County 1900 Census, lists a Thomas T. Cheatham, age 6. That census source came from rootsweb, in alphabetical order instead of family grouping.
About the counties, in case you need to know:
Milton County was annexed to Fulton County, 1932.
Madison County and Franklin County share a common border.
Do you have any records of an Isham or John Isham Cheatham having lived in Franklin County?
Do you have any records of a Rhoda Payne who married into the Cheatham/Chatham family?
I'm particularly interested in Rhoda Payne's children.
Rhoda was born abt 1822-1825.
There's a Rhoda Payne and John Isham Cheatham in my line and I'm tring to clear up some discrepencies. My Cheathams were from 1. Oglethorpe Co. 2. Madison Co. 3. Jackson Co.
Dear Cher,
My mother was a Cheatham, a descendent of John Isham (b1827), son of Isham from Chesterfield,VA. Isham was a son of Josiah. Isham appears to have first come to Oglethorpe County, then to Madison County.
One of John Isham's sons was James John who died about 1902, Jefferson, GA. His son was Norman Lee Cheatham, (1890 - 1970), my grandfather.
My concern is about John Isham. Census records of Madison Co., GA 1850 - 1870, list a Roday/Rodah/Rhodah (b1823/24; depending on census year) as his wife. They were in Madison County, and migrated to Jackson County sometime after 1870.
They had several children:
David Isham (b1847)
Mary Cinthia Permelia (b1848)
Rhodah/Rhodia Elizabeth (b1850)
Georgia Ann Nanney (b1851)
Rispann Josephine (b1854)
Jacob Bailey (b1853)
Delilah Catherine (b1856)
James John (b1857)
Mildred Louise (b 1859)
My grandfather's first cousin Montie Cheatham lived all her life in Jefferson, GA (Jackson Co.) In her notes given to my aunt, she lists John Isham's wife as Rhoda Payne.
However there is some controversy about this. I was told Rhoda Payne married another Isham Cheatham who changed his name to Chatham. I came across some more internet records that stated a David A. Chatham was the son of Isham Cheatham/Chatham and Rhoda Payne. Then I just recently came across a record of Georgia Ann Cheatham, b1852, Franklin County, who married a Jasper Carithers of Madison County.
My Georgia Ann Nanney Cheatham also married a Jasper Carithers - according to Montie's notes.
Family rumor is that the old Cheatham family bible that goes back to at least John Isham went into the hands of my grandfather's sister, Ada (Whitlow). She then passed it to another family member who would not let it out of the house. Her only compromise was to read the genealogy material out loud to her over the phone.
I've completely lost track of the Whitlows, and Montie died several years ago.
I have a few other records from Oglethorpe, Madison, and Jackson County census and cemetery records (Georgia).
Id really like to solve this mystery of just what Rhoda married John Isham.
Please let me know if you have anything that can help.
PS That was interesting about a Cheatham owning a boys music school. Do you have any detailed information about that? I'm a music teacher myself.
Joseph, your are exactly right! Edward did receive a land grant (War of 1812). Also, he and Phoebe were in GA together with children David (my line), Franklin, William and Lucinda. By the time Phoebe settled in Ark she had nine children (all with Cogbill name). There are a couple of theories 1. Pheobe is the Anner P. Cogbill, Edward and Peter's sister and the children were siblings. I don't buy that. I think Pheobe is Anner P. but the children are hers and they were illegitimate. They are actually listed that way in the land grant Phoebe received. Please email me personnally BMcGee(a)nctr.fda.gov and I'll share with you what I know about the Cogbill's.
It is my understanding that Edward Cogbill, my ancestor, from Chesterfield Co.,VA, received a land grant in Greene Co.,GA After a time, he and his wife, who may have been Phoebe, divorced. He went back to VA and she went on to AL and then to ARk. They had four children and then she had more from another marriage. She settled in SE Arkansas. I live in Macon, GA and my great-grandfather was Peter B. Cogbill and his brother was William W.T.Cogbill. Peter was parolled at Appomattox and William died at Gettysburg. Phoebe may explain how the Cogbills got to Arkansas. I am always looking for more info.
