Hi Jacque,
Yes, I have added CHEATHAM to my research, but have not yet put the data into
my Brother's Keeper program so it can be entered onto the webpage. It was
the maiden name of my former mother-in-law...making it the grandparents of my
son. I loved my mil as my own mother, and enjoyed asking her questions about
her interesting childhood in the Texas panhandle, so the basic information
was known when I started researching her family.
I am at a disadvantage at the moment, and do not have access to my paper
files...we are on a 'working vacation' in Ft. Lauderdale...my husband is
working (he's a catastrophe adjuster) and my daughter and I are on
vacation...8-) I will attempt to give the general information I have on her
family, but must do it from memory.
Her branch of the CHEATHAM family was originally from Virginia, and during
the 1700s, they settled in TN. She was born in the Carson County, Texas,
town of Panhandle, in 1920. Her father discovered oil on his rangeland, and
his mother, her grandmother, owned the hotel in Panhandle for many years.
Her grandmother's name was Wilks...she married in TN, where her husband died
young. She then moved to OK with her brother and his family as a young widow
with 3 small children.
As a young man, her son headed west in a covered wagon and settled in Carson
County. She remarried, moved to Panhandle, and reared another set of
children while running the hotel herself. I have many photos of this family,
including a great one of her grandmother sitting in a rocking chair on the
front porch of the hotel...leaning back in a big laugh...she was quite an
interesting person, and a wonderful example to her many descendants.
I have some excellent information on this branch of the CHEATHAM family, and
will post it to the list as soon as I get home....I also manage the Carson
County page for the TXGenWeb program, and look forward to putting her
genealogy on it, as her family made a great contribution to the settlement of
the county.
I hope all of you will post your CHEATHAM generations...let's see how many
connections we can make!
Regards,
LaRae
LaRae,
I visited your web site, and I like it very much. Mine is not nearly as
colorful or nicely laid out as yours. Would love to know how to make the
tables of info with button links, perhaps in the future when I have more
time.
I am assuming you are also researching the CHEATHAM surname, so I went
looking for your connection on your web site and could not find any info on
CHEATHAM there. Wonder if I overlooked it. My mother is a CHATHAM, with
our earliest ancestor spelling his name CHEATHAM. My 2nd great-grandfather
CHATHAM married a BROOKS, his third wife. I descend from his second wife
PARAMORE. Was curious to know if our CHEATHAM/CHATHAM surnames connect
anywhere?
I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello CHEATHAM Cousins,
Welcome to our new CHEATHAM family mailing list members who have joined us
recently! You are invited to introduce yourselves and tell us about your
CHEATHAM research.
As subscribers, you all know how family surname mailing lists work, so I'd
like to pass on to you a bit about how the suite of CHEATHAM GenConnect
boards differ from the list and the functions of both, how they work
together, and how we can best utilize them in our research.
The CHEATHAM family GenConnect boards can be found at....
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~tmetrvlr/cheathamb.html
This is from the GenConnect User FAQs.....
"Both mailing lists and Boards have strengths and weaknesses. A mailing
list, even one that is publicly archived as most of the RootsWeb lists are,
is primarily focussed on the present and discussion taking place currently
among a group of people.
"In depth discussion is possible and direct interaction among the members of
the group of subscribers. Discussion on a mailing list tends to cover a
topic at length, and when that discussion is exhausted a new discussion
begins on another subject. The strength of a mailing list is the ability to
include a large number of people and opinions in an ongoing, in depth,
discussion benefiting list subscribers immediately.
"By contrast, query and message boards like those in our GenConnect system
not
only function within the present time, but provide long term archiving and
universal searchability by anyone who chooses to search for a surname.
"There is no requirement to subscribe to a discussion group to make a contact
through a search, post a question to a Query Board, or access archived
documents, using GenConnect. The strength of a Query board rests with its
being the best place to post a query about your "dead end" or "brick wall"
ancestors. You might not get an answer tomorrow, or even next week; but the
query remains in place for anyone at any future time to find it and to make
contact with the original poster.
"A far larger audience will search the surnames included on the board
messages over a period of time than will subscribe to any one mailing list.
The non-query (document) boards provide an excellent place to record, search,
and archive Bible Records, Biographies, Deeds, Obituaries, Pensions, and
Wills, for your future reference, and to aid others in their research.
"If everyone who has access to some family record in the above categories
would simply transcribe and post the information in their possession, in time
there would be a very valuable storehouse of information for the benefit of
future genealogists."
It has been suggested to managers that posts made to the GenConnect boards be
forwarded on to the corresponding mailing list, thus giving more immediate
access to this information for list members. Unless there are objections, I
will begin sharing board queries and data posts with you.
Thanks so much for the opportunity to pass on information regarding this
terrific research tool. Have a great week!
Kindest regards,
