Hello
Here in NC, Indians were first listed as Mulatto, not Indian
Mulatto also could be, white and indian, white and black
black and indian. My Grandmother's Mother was a Chavis
They were Indian/White. Mixing with white until the
indian was just a dribble. I have found that most Chavis
that I know around here in NC are Indian. Some came from
Horry Co SC. Marlboro Co. Some from Roberson Co. NC
They are probably originally, descendents of the English
Immigrants in the 1600's who migrated this way, and
married with the Indians from Va. which many think.
not proven. If you can go back before your grandfather
from Wake, you many find some in Marlboro Co SC and
Robeson Co NC.

>I'm African American and my grandfather was born in Wake, NC. His mother was mixed but I'm not sure with what or from whom. I went as far as my G-grandmas Great grandparents. My G-Grandmas Great Grandparents are listed as Black & Mulatto varying on every census record through the years. The side of her family listed as Mulatto the most were from Rowan,NC and owned by John Verble in 1860. But basically I know her Great Grandparents aren't another race fully but perhaps half. My mom took the 23and Me Dna Test and it said she was 9.9% Euro both Northern and "Non" Specific Euro and 0.6% Native American. On her relative matches she has 6 cousins with Chavis & Chavers as their family surnames. The test says she shares 2-3 DNA segments with them and they are predicted 4th-5th Cousins but going by the relative chart they are actually 6th-7th cousins like they have the same 3rd and 4th grandparents. My Questions: Who are they? Where did they come from? What race/ethnicity are they?!

My grandmother was Maggie Chavis daughter of Addie and Donald, she married Hugh Locklear. If you care to email me I can try to get you more info. My Aunt Gertrude married Harvard Chavis, from Pembroke, NC.
Thank you,
