Library.uncg.edu Petition Analysis Record #11279002; Location:Gates Co. NC year:1790
The petitioners request the legislature to pass a law validating acquisition of land by a group of descendants of Indians and blacks. In 1724 the Chowan Indians received 11,360 acres of land in Chowan County, later Gates Co. The Indians sold most of the land. The Indian men all died, and the women "mixed with negroes." The free blacks and their mixed-blood children served as soldiers for the colonials in the Revolution. Supported by William Lewis, Samuel Harrell, and other white men, they seek title to "small remnants of the aforesaid tract of land."
Library.uncg.ed
Perfect example of the type of mulattoes that would appear too "Black", but they share some of the surnames

That's the way a lot of people would like for it to have happened. What is more likely and obvious is that the mulatto offsprings were incorporating as much White and Indian(when they could, but rare) to try and dilute the Black blood in their offspring. My grandmother grew up in one of these communities and spoke of everyone in the community measuring the evolution of their neighbors children. They monitored complexions, hair texture, eyes, nose and lips looking for signs of Negroidom. Those who didn't meet the specifications of the community's discerning eye were silently branded outcasts lest he or she provoked a tongue lashing with the N-word. Ironic as it is it is true, even if it was a family member or close family friend. A shame what Black blood good do to a persons reputation and dignity

Eliab Chavis (Chavers) was born in 1806 or 1812 in Robeson County, NC. He married Sophia in Cumberland County in 1832. He died in 1840. His father was Erasmus Chavis and his mother was Rachel; they were married in 1790 in Robeson. his sister Rachel Chavis Sampson Carter was my great-great-great-grandmother. Her son Thomas F. Chavers was my grandmother Jessie's grandfather. They were all Lumbee Indians, altho some Census takers identified them as Mulatto or white.
