my grandfather was Lawrence Gilbert Chavis, his father I believe was James C Chavis. James C was married to Mary Chavis, whom I believe was Jordan's daughter. My grandfather had lots of children. One of his daughters Willie or Wilheminia married a Brigman.

When was your Lawrence born- I have a time frame of 1853 to 1859 depending on what record you use - His mother would have been Mary Brigman - daddy would have been Eli Chavis 1833 - 1895= Mary Brigman was the first wife of Eli - his second wife was MAry Jane Hood Huckabee - that is all that I really have on Lawrence.
The Brigmans intersect on several levels, starting with Jordan Chavis (M) Martha (Patey) Brigman (Daughter of John & Molly/Mary Brigman of Adamsville) - Eli (M) a Mary Brigman (I belive this Mary to be the daughter or Thomas and Sukey Brigman) this is the brother of Martha -
I know that many Chavis' married Grants but in my immediate line I haven't found any but I kinda figure if the Spelling is "CHavis" then we're related considering how many children that Jordan and Eli had -

Afternoon DOug:
It's been a long time since we communicated. I hope that what I say here will help you out somewhat. The "M" Mullato was used by the census takers and the tax collects instead of and "I"" for Indian becuse Indians weren't a taxable entity but an "M" on the sheets allowed them to tax the property. Slowly, the Native Americans were slipped into the "W" White world and again there were reasons for that. At one point lands were taken away because the were Indians so in order to control the keeping of the land and in order to vote as well as other things, the "I" & "M" slowly became "W" - it was a survival life - and in order to survive, many Native American abandoned their Native Lives for the White world - that's why Native AMerican reserch is so difficult to do

It's been a long time since I've visited this site. There are many theories and paths concerning the Chavis Surname. One that was brought to my attention about two years ago says there is a possibility that it came from a name that was orginally from Normandy, before it belonged to France - the name is Jaques Pierre Payan./Payen with a dit name (We call them extentions) anyway the Dit name is Sieur de Chavios - the theory is that the Native Americans didn't realize that Payan/Payen was the mans last name and thought that Chavios was - so the "O" was dropped and it came out as Chavis. This line and spelling can be traced back to 470 AD - another theory come from the Schivas of Scotland - near Aberdeend Scotland -- Another theory is that it comes from the Chevas with the "e' & "A" taking on the sounds of the "a' and the 'i' in german - a young man named Johan (John)Chevas came into Charles town (Charleston) in the mid 1600's with a group of Presbyterians - there are as many t!
heories of the origin of the name as there are Chavis lines - French, Spanish, Portugesse?? I found a link last night that has them in England -
I'm afraid that the Orgin of the name may never be known -

I'm working on a "Doc" Chavis that is on the 1860 Marlboro County census - he is in the home of Alexander & Amanda Chavis - He is marked as a Nephew - and that is all that I have - I've never been able to find the connection to the two Chavis lines -- If you have anything that you might be able to tie them together I sure would appreciate it
