I am Ray's oldest son. I did get a chance to meet my Grandmother Annie and my Aunts, Lillie, Nellie and Pearlie. It would be nice to be able to correspond and then I can find out and fill in many of the gaps that I have about the family on my dad's side.

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to chime in here for a minute. I'm one of the volunteer administrators of the Lost Colony Genealogy and DNA project. We'e the original group, but we split from the Center last September and the project is now located here. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~molcgdrg/index.htm
You can see we've done a lot of work in less than a year. The Chavis name is very important to this research, as you already know. If the colonists survived, they assuredly assimilated with the native people and those mixed people became eventually, the Lumbee. Hopefully we'll find DNA that matches the colonists surnames in the Lumbee folks.
You're certainly not too late. We need people whose heritage goes back to the surnames of interest on both their paternal and maternal sides.
Take a look at our FAQ pages and our publications page, then take a look at the DNA page and also the surname pages. Unfortunately, we don't have any Chavis that have tested yet and joined the project, or submitted any genealogy, but we'd love to have someone and we need someone by that last name with proven genealogy to these families and this area.
The following quote is from the Annals of the Ashpole Community 1750-1814 which is in Robeson County:
Prior to the coming of the white men, there were a few Indian families - Oxendine, Dial, Hunt, Chavis, Fiveash, Locklear and possibly others. If they identified the streams and other natural objects by any geographical names, no vestige of it has come down to me.
This is why we are interested in Chavis.
Please feel free to contact me for more information or to join our dna project or our genealogy research group. It's free to join the research group.
Roberta Estes

Is it too late to get in on this project?
I have always been told I had Native American blood from my grandmother Chavis. She refused to talk about it. I now know the reason. In my research Native Americans were considered a "low" society. They were refered to many times as free people of color.
My e-mail is dparker(a)sccoast.net.

My great granddad on my mom's side had a brother named Addaway Chavis. Their parents were Joseph Franklin Chavis and Lizzie West. These two men (Charles Collis Chavis and Addaway Chavis are buried at St. Paul's Holiness Church Cemetary.
There is also a Thomas Addison Chavis Born 1850? who married Rebecca Josephine Sharpe. His parents were Gabriel Chavis (Born 1806) and Naomi Hutto (Born 1812). Both were born and died in SC.
I hope this helps--- Most of my Chavis' were born in or near Edgefield County/Lexington County.

My great grandmother was Annie M. Day, born 1888 in Edgefield county, SC. She had 3 older sisters, Maybell, Melissa, and Dora. Annie has 2 children, Frank and Pearlie, with a "Fulmer." Then she married "Add" Chavis. Together they had Lillie, Nellie, Gussie, Gracie, Ray, Harmon and twins that died young, all born in Aiken SC. All the elders have passed away. My dad, Gussie's son, is one of the only one's left. He thinks he remembers hearing of Add being a Preacher in SC and moving somewhere near Savannah GA. If anyone has ANY info. it would be greatly appreciated. Amy

I guess its been a while since I've logged onto this site. I am related to Chavis's in Texas, Houston to be specific. My grandfather's name was Horace and he had an uncle named Steve "Jack" Chavis from Oakland CA who passed on just a few years ago. I didn't know either of them, my father was a Chavis but he died 33 years ago just before I was born so what I am doing is trying to connect for me and my siblings here in CA.
I learned more in this 8 year old thread than I have known my entire life.

I'm sorry it took so long for me to get in touch with you. I have been trying to reseach my lineage for my Lumbee card.
I received my mom's birth certificate and on it was Croatan
for my grand-parents. Research has kept me pretty busy. But I would love the help. I am going to North Carolina on Monday to visit some of mama's family, you known doing this research can become very addicting. Here is my e-mail address so when I come back maybe we can do more searching togather.
Thank you, Debby

Hi,
I'm trying to find information on a Henry Evans born circa 1768 who married Nelly (unknown) born circa 1768.
This post caught my eye because there were several marriages between the Evans and Chavis/Chavers families through out my family tree.
Nelly was a full blooded Cherokee Indian and the Chavers' in our family were also Cherokee.
I'm just curious if there could be a connection.
