I understand completly, the Chavis name is a hard one, we are all pretty much related I think, at least way back. I was told for years by my mother because I did not know my dad until I was 23 that I was Cherokee, I started asking questions about age of 12/13 and there are in fact Chavis' on the rolls with the Cherokee but that is not my line and I know when my half sister contacted them 14yrs ago or so they flat out said no, that yes there were SOME Chavis'(and I have met some ) but without even asking family names they were adament that we had no connection it seemed they were not enrolling that name anymore, but thats all hear-say. In my research I have not found a Chavis that WAS NOT native but the tribal names I find are Lumbee,Tuscarora, Meherrin,Cheraw and Pee Dee and if you go to the lost colony research web site they use the name of Croatan. If I can be any help or you just want to share info or talk let me know you may contact me at either wachsl(a)bellsouth.net or l!
ianewachs(a)yahoo.com GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY HUNTING !!

Jay,
My name is Liane Wachs ( born Chavis ) I had years ago some census papers and traced my Chavis line back quite a bit, my ex stole those papers and I have always said two names that stand out in my memory are Ishmael and Josiah Chavis and I cannot remember for the life of me if it is because I actually traced back to them or one of them,or they were just names I saw on the census reports. What I do know for sure is my great-great grandmother was Marthenia(sp?)Chavis, she was a twin to a Bethenia she had my great grandfather,Hilly Chavis with a Hutto man but at the time they were each married to other people so Hilly took the Chavis name when he found out later in life that he was a product of an affair even though his parents did marry later when Hutto's wife passed,Hilly was married more then once ( like most Chavis' lol) my great grandmother, which I have no info on just family talk of her, her name was Betty Dunn its said she was a slave on a ranch and while he was traveling !
south, still mad about being born a "bastard" he stole her and had a set of twin boys as well as my grandfather, Levi Chavis b.25 Aug 1912 (my birthday as well ) Levi married my grandmother Mary Mahaliley (sp?)Tew and had many children, Herman,Harmon, Billy,Gloria,my dad,Jimmy, twins Barbara and Buddy and I know there was another girl one of the older children but she died, they say in prison and no one talks of her. I was just wondering if you have come accross any of my KNOWN Chavis line names in your research since I saw you trace back to Ishmael and I do remember on the papers my line was in the Pee Dee SC area as well, I want to say Hilly was born in Orangeburg. I traveled to Orangeburg about 7/8 yrs ago when I was invited by the Pee Dee(in Salley, SC ) and then was invited to "join" but did not because I was uncomfortable with the fact that the people joining at the time were all working off of Marthenia and Hilly and none of them were DIRECTLY related but instead were !
distant cousins at best but were allowed to join, as well as the fact
that it just didnt "feel" right, I did not feel any real connection with the people or the land, unlike when I have traveled to other areas of NC and SC and I "tingle" all over inside lol anyway, I was just wondering if you had any info that would help me go back beyond Marthenia again. Thanks for your time. You may contact me directly ( and anyone else may as well, if you want to share info ) at wachsl(a)bellsouth.net or lianewachs(a)yahoo.com
