I know this was written a while ago and dont know if anyone will read it but I wanted to put this out there. What may seem like incest going on may not have been. With Native culture we had "clans" of family not the "names" we use now and with-in those clans we were concidered family but that does not necessarily mean there was a blood connection. Also what happened alot once we had sirnames (and census takers would come)is two families would agree to marry many of its members to each other for generations so when cousins were getting married again alot of times they were cousins by marriage not blood and with the Chavis family at least, there were already many divorces going on. Some where the man would divorce one sister and marry another maybe because the first didnt produce children. An easy way to explain....I am living a modern day one that may look like incest 100 years from now on a census report....here we go! LOL I divorced my husband and was a single mom of 3, tw!
o boys and a girl, my middle child, a boy, met a little girl when he was two at the pre-school where I taught. He fell in LOVE ( lol ) this little girl is being raised by her grandma ( moms - mother ) I became very close with the grandma because the children even 4 years later were still " in love " during our friendship is when I divorced. A year after I divorced her son moved to our area and he and I became friends and after more then a year of friendship we started dating. Now we are married and he has adopted my children well, the now 10 year olds are still in love and plan to one day marry themselves (and open a vet hospital)lol if this should happen and I am starting to really believe it may. It will look as though ( atleast on paper ) first cousins got married but realisticly they have no blood ties but my son's birth certificate does list his "girlfriends" uncle as his father.........Just so you know most Native peoples-tribes were VERY MUCH against incest. Makes th!
e reaseach even more intersting although more difficult !! LOL Have fu
n hunting and if I can help anyone please feel free to email wachsl(a)bellsouth.net

I have sent a couple emails through your site as well. I was born Liane Chavis. I am the great-granddaughter of Hilley Chavis, the granddaughter of Levi Chavis and Mary ( Tew ) Chavis and the daughter of Jimmy Leon Chavis. I had census reports from the 1800's that list the family as "free non-whites" , mullato and poss. indian. I am very interested in this research, I love history, true history I should say. If I can be of any help please feel free to contact me. My email address is wachsl(a)bellsouth.net. On your site I also sent a phone number to get in touch with me as well. Thank you for your time.
Liane

I was born a Chavis but my great grandfather's name was actually Hilley Hutto..there is several stories of why he changed his name to Chavis...sup. his mothers maiden name. I also saw though marriage between Chavis and Hutto in a census report. The name Emmit rings a bell with me although I cant be positive as to why. My grandparents were Levi and Mary (Tew ) Chavis and my father is Jimmy Chavis. if you want to email me directly you may as well as anyone else who wants to talk about some Chavis-Hutto or any of the other names history. The email is wachsl(a)bellsouth.net
