I have had such a hard time with the Chavis Family, I have not started with the Byrd's. There is no way possible that they are half as complicated though!

Thanks Sandy,
My John Chavis was married to Rachel Keys, born 1775. I think both families have Carolina roots. John and Rachel lived in Louisiana at some point. I don't know if this means anything to you, but, in another part of my family tree is the Layssard family. I don't know the connection yet, but the Layssards were somehow affiliated with the Byrd family in Louisiana. In the Louisiana census of 1860, Rapides Parish, there is a Julia Layssard in the same household as a Francoise Byrd. Do you know of any connection between these two families?

I have no dates on John Chavis. I did get an e-mail from a cousin yesterday. She is the granddaughter of my great uncle Hugo but she also married Janie Chavis Goodwin's grandson. I asked her what she could find out for me. She talked with her father-in-law. He is adamant that his grandfather's name was John Chavis AND that his great grandfather's name was John Chavis. This has just thrown another monkey wrench in the whole thing!
My mother's brother did tell my mother that Annie Ruth Chavis had a brother named John and that their father's name was also John. I don't know if maybe he was confused or what.

Hi Sandy,
I was wondering when your g-grandfather John Chavis was born. My John Chavis was born in 1774. Are they one in the same ?
Thanks,
Margaret
What about the Chavis' from Tennessee? I have been searching for our "roots"
and can't seem to get any where. It looks like my line were all born and
raised in Eastern Tennessee. I find a Sarah Chavis born in 1804 in Tenn with the
following children, William born in 1835, Peter born in October 1837 (my line),
Isaac born in October 1837 (yes twins, the only ones that I could ever find
and the only ones born into our line since then), Will born in 1841, Marion, a
male child born in 1844 and Jane born in 1846. I found these in the 1850 census
of Campbell County. They are family 601 and Family 600 was a Nancy Chavis
with 4 children, family 606 was a Dicey Chavis aged 80, with a Sarah Ivey age 21
and James Ivey aged 1.
Anyone have any information on these people?

Hi, Patsy!
I'm also researching AndersonChavis andBertha Evans from Wake Co, NC.who had a son named Richard Chavis who was born in Wake Co,NC in 1846. They had a younger son, York Chavis who was born in 1869. York is my mother-in-law's grandfather.
1850 census shows Anderson and Bitha. In fact, every censu has her name spelled differently. In same 1850 censu they show a Nelly Chavis in the home who was born in 1770. Do you know if Nelly is Anderson's mother?
Please contact me so we can try to figure out if this is the same family.

Do you have an concrete, provable information that Ishmael was in the Pee Dee area as I have found him only in the Robeson area ?? I would be interested in sharing information with you but doubt if we share an ancestry off of Ishmael - I have a theory that he and my Jordan may be related in some way but then again if you are a Chavis you are definately related at some point back up the Chavis Line prior to about 1790 -

Misty,
You are correct. Pardon my hasty reply to the poster.
"Chavis" appears in several groups of people.
My point was to say that it is VERY predominate among the Lumbee, of which I am a member.
However - we probably share the same ancestry, since I am a descendant of ISHMAEL CHAVIS (b.circa 1750) in the Pee Dee SC area.

Good afternoon:
The Actual Origin of the Chavis name is an answer that we may never really find - there are several theories to the Base beginings - I can assure you however, that I Am a Chavis and I can also assure you that I Am Not a Lumbee - I am from the Pee Dee that are and have been in Marlboro county, SC. I trace back to a Jordan Chavis, B: 1805 in or around the Bertie County area -
I've been researching my particular line for about 16 years now and even tho they do at times travel into the Richmond, Robeson and Scotland county area's of North Carolina and since the Chavis family, like any other family did have a tendancy to marry cousins - and some are today part of the Lumbee Nation, not ALL Chavis family members are of the Lumbee world -

My grandmother was Annie Ruth Chavis Bolin.
Her parents were Eunice Hooker and John Chavis.
I am told that John had a brother named David who married Rosena Williams. I have also been told that they had many other brothers and sisters. I have been trying for months to put this puzzle together and sometimes feel like giving up.
Do you have any more information on your John Chavis?

I am just wondering which John Chavis this is. I am told that my great grandfather was John Chavis, married to Eunice Hooker. I don't have any dates or very much other information at all. I am told that he is buried at Pen Branch.
I know that my grandmother (Annie Ruth Chavis Bolin) had two sisters who were twins, Mary, married to Lee Knight, and Janie, married to Sam Goodwin.
I am looking for a Martha Chavis (Chibes) married to Elias Roberts.
Children are Ira, Sylvester (Charles), Rachel, Mary Ann, Dolphin,
Newton, Sebastien, Henrieta. See
