The Chavis family tree appears to be extensive with multiple branches and
agendas.
Chavis is a popular name within the Lumbee and PeeDee tribes of North and
South Carolina as well as the Louisianna creole. The Native American groups are
in the process of applying (for a third or fourth time) tribal recognition
with the federal government. There is some denial going on within this
multicultural clan that there is any additional ethnicity beyond the Native American
mixed with Caucasion. My family line of Chavis have all been approachable
and sincere although we do not all look alike. I am, like you only interested
in the truth of the origins of this clan and could care less about the racial
mixture or presentation. Good luck in your digging. You will probably have
more success with contact to private emails and or personal encounters due to
the federal recognition piece which amounts to federal benefits if they are
successful
Compben.

There was an Emmitt Chavis who married Leck Chavis. I don't know about Emmitt's side of the family but Leck was the daughter of Rosena Williams and David Chavis.

Another thing that I failed to mention is that my grandfather's side (The Bolins) also have several other Chavis connections and I am also told that the Harley's are connected there too.

Check this out: My grandmother was Annie Ruth Chavis and I have been researching her side of the family. I have not had much luck but the reason I started was that we have some friends which we have been friends with for over 20 years. Last summer we were at the lake and she said, "My mama was a Chavis from North, SC" That was all too weird because my grandmother was a Chavis from North so I started digging.
This ladies' mama was Josephine Chavis. Josephine Chavis married Joseph Williamson. Josephine had a twin sister named Pearline who married Aiken Williamson. This was two sisters who married two brothers. Josephine and Pearline had several sisters. There were 6 total. One of them was named Leck who married Emmett Chavis.
One was named Ida Marie and I will have to find my paper to tell you about the others.
Anyway, Josephine's parents were Rosena Williams and David Chavis. I am told that David Chavis and my great grandfather, John Chavis were brothers.

If I am not mistaken, the Margie Bolin listed in this obit was married to my great-uncle Woodrow Bolin.

I find it funny what you said about us giving up quickly! I have been trying to find information on my grandmother, Annie Ruth Chavis Bolin, from Orangeburg, SC. So far, I've found a BUNCH of Chavises who will not tell you anything. I've found a BUNCH of Chavises who will slam the door in your face. I've found several who have told me that I didn't need to be digging up anything on the Chavises.
These people don't know me and have no real reason for saying that. It seems as if they are ashamed of something or are trying to hide something. I would just like to know the truth. I don't care about color or crimes.

My grandmother was Annie Ruth Chavis Bolin from Orangeburg, SC. I have been trying to find out about her side of the family but the Chavis family is VERY complicated.
I live in Edgefield, SC, which is about 30 miles from Augusta, GA. I go to Augusta a lot so if there is anything I can go over there and look for , let me know.

Hi,
How are you? I wondered if you could help me research a set of grandparents. They were John Cheavers (Chavis) c.1774 and Rachel Keyes c.1775. I'm told they have family connections to the Carolinas, but I have had a tough time re-connecting because no one today remembers anything about it. My fellow researchers tell me they raised a family in Louisiana and moved around a lot, near several military posts. They lived in Opelousas, Baton Rouge, and Donaldsonville, Louisiana. Their daughter Mary Chavis married Honore Gradenigo in 1857 in St. Landry parish, La. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Margaret

US Census records in the 1800s and part of the 1900s classified 'people of color' (including INDIANS) as "mulatto" -meaning 'not white'. They just lumped all non-whites in one category.
The CHAVIS name is prominent among LUMBEE Indians in Robeson (not "Robenson") County NC.
