I am trying to get information regarding a Lucy Chavis who was born in the 1800s. She married a Neal Smith. They had several children. Lucy is buried at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church cemetary in Marlboro County, SC. She is my great grandmother. I have been told she is of indian descent. Thank you.

Donna, it appears that we are not of the same Chavis family. The men in our family did not possess the curly hair you mention. I don't recall that anyone ever had the green eyes you mention either. There is a group of Chavis' who settled in AR who may have migrated up from Alabama and points south.
The vast majority of families in our area are without question of native ancestryt. It was common among the natives to adopt the names of men they admired for whatever reason. It has been suggested that our name was adopted from a number of sources including French.
No bells ringing here for the family you are describing. Sorry. I wish you success in your search for answers.
Which CA fire are you referring to? Are you in the SD area?

I called my mom when I received this message; I always remember her talking about your grandmother. She always tells how much your grandmother loved "Mr. Coy" I had to write this down so that I got the words just right. Momma says your grandmother always said "The higher the bush the sweeter the berry" I suppose you know that Mr. Coy Coward was a tall man and he was very handsome.
I hope this answers some of your questions. Where are you located? I would love to hear from you. Feel free to contact me directly if you wish.

Hi there,
Thanks for your query. I, myself, don't have enough information about my Chavis side to help anyone. My great grandfather died in 1899 at age of 39, thus was born in 1869. I understand he may have been born in Arkansas, but moved and married in Springfield, MIssouri to Lucy Clementine Morris. I had a copy of their marriage certificate but it burned down in the big California fires 3 years ago.
No death certificate can be located for him, and of course, all his children are now deceased, my grandmother was the youngest born 1899, two months before he died. However, we does still have a few grandchildren alive, one of which is Homer Chavis, Jr.
Traits of the Chavis family were tall men with very curly brown hair (even kinky for some). There were some green eyes, dark hair for some. I do know that he spoke French, and it is also rumored that he may be cajun french. The native part isn't much more then a rumor.
Does any of this ring a bell?
Donna Preston
grandaughter of WIlla Chavis

I am interested in finding out more information about a Lucy Chavis that married a Smith, possibly a Neal or Neil Smith. My grandmother was Eliza Smith Coward (married Coy Coward whose mother was a Barfield). My mother told me her grandmother's name was Lucy Chavis Smith. My grandmother had a brother "Cab" Smith, also Neal (or Neil) Smith and Will Smith. Also 2 sisters: Cora and Bett. Bett married a Grant.
My mother is 85 years old and does not remember much about her mother's family. She, too, told me they did not talk about her family much. She did say they were indian. I would appreciate any information. Thank you. Beth Thomas

Sorry it took so long for me to respond. Thanks Misty, I appreciate it! I'll look into it, I've always reached a dead-end when trying to go further than Eliza Jeffers/Jeffries.
