My great grandfather name is Johnnie Chavis and my great grandmother maiden name is Elizabeth Chavis. My grandmother always told me that our family were never slaves and she knew that we were indians (but she didn't know the name). So during my research I've found several surnames that the lumbee indians have that my family has. Ofcourse Chavis, also Snellings, and Woods. The only thing that is making me not so sure is that my family has always lived in Wake county since anybody can remember; lumbee indians are from robenson county. One other thing we are black, and in a lot of articles that I have read lately says that lumbee indians didn't have any black in them. Also when I look at our census from the 1900's and earlier it has my family listed as mulatto's (during one decade a family could be mulatto, and the very next decade that same family was listed as black , so it kept switching back and forth). My grandmother also told me that her grandmother was a white woman w!
ith black hair, and she called her "mu". When people see my family members they always ask us if we are related to the lumbee indians in robeson county because we favor them. A lot of my family members have gray or green eyes, and olived toned skin. Someone please help me out!!!!

Thank you for your prompt response. I'm sorry that we are not researching the same family. Where in NC are your Chavis's from? As you know, the Chavis family in NC is very large. I have come across a lot of Chavis family information that I save in case it can assist someone else. Many people have assisted me in my venture.
Do you have any additional information on your Chavis family that you can share?

I am researching John Chavis, born1762 or 1763 to "free" parents during slavery . He was born in Pitt Co, NC or Granville Co,NC. Apparently both counties claim him. He married Sarah Frances Anderson in Granville Co, NC. Some reports state they had no children others state he had one son, Anderson Chaves or Chavis, born around 1810 in NC. This John Chavis died June 10, 1838.
Do you have any information on this John Chavis as to who his parents were, where they were born, where they died and are buried. Also, do you have any information as to where John died and is buried.
Any information will be greatly appreciated!

I am also searching for information on Anderson Chavis, son of John and Sarah Anderson. What is your relationship to this family?
I am related to the Chavis family by marriage and in the process of working on my children's family tree. According to verbal accounts, Anderson was the father of York Chavis (born around 1860 in NC)who fathered Thosby Chavis ( born around 1901 in NC). Thosby Chavis is the great grand father of my children.
Please contact me if this sounds like the same Chavis family you are researching. Hopefully, we can share additional information as we find it.
