Thank you for the information but I would say it isn't the same Doc that I am looking for - he was in Marlboro county in 1880 - there is proably a family connection somewhere along the line tho

Probably not the same one, but interesting. In our family there was a William "Doc" CHAVOUS 1856 -- 1920 (unmarried). He is buried at Passworth Cemetery in Augusta, Georgia. He was the son of Hampton Abraham Chavis/Chavous and Christina Williams. They lived in Orangeburg Co. South Carolina before 1860. By 1860, they were in Georgia. In 1880, Doc was living with his parents in Richmond Co. GA. On that census it says Doc was born in 1856. Abraham is listed as Abram Chavous, b. 1820.
Abraham's brothers are said to be: Gabriel, Patrick, Josiah, Philip and James Calvin.

In 1890 he is at his uncle house in Marlboro county - the Uncle is Alexander Chavis and Alexanders wife if Amanda - this is the only time that I have seen his name on any census - considering the fact that the Chavis Clan(s) bounced back and forth across state lines for a living and for their spouses - ti's possible that he was from North Carolina - possibly Robeson county.
