Hi,
I thought many of you might be interested to know what Wes Taukchiray and
Alice Bee Kasakoff write about the surname "Chavis" in their chapter,
"Contemporary Native Americans in South Carolina," in the book, Indians of
the Southeastern United States, edited by J. Anthony Paredes and published
in 1992 by the University of Alabama Press. In writing about "scattered
households of Indian descent that do not form full-fledged communities,"
they say: "The Indians named Chavis between Salley and Neeses [in South
Carolina], though numerous, may fall into this category" (page 73).
Do the names "Chavis" and "Sarvis" have the same origin? Are they
variations on the same name? Do either of them appear among groups like the
Lumbee?
Thanks,
Sharlotte
