Do you know any of Norris's family. I think Berry was with him before he died.I live in Valdosta,Ga. Thanks for any info. Anne

Rachel,I also have the newspaper article. I know about grandpa from 1900 till he died. What I am trying to find out about is the time between 1859 and 1900. There are no records that iI have found yet. he's not in the 1880 census.
I am still searching the 1870. Retta Ashe sent me pictures and info of Hazery Georgeanna and their family . The Smiths are easy to research as they were in clinch and brooks counties . anne

Anne, what exactly do you mean by find him? Where he was born? Well, Aunt Gwen has a newspaper article which was written about him while he was still alive. The article had to do with his background and the fact that he was turning 100. In the article, he stated that he was born in Orangeburg County, SC in 1859 and grew up with his grandparents. I read this article in March of this year. Also, Christy had been in touch with a distant cousin of ours, named Chief John Barry Chavis, who told her a story about Berry, in which it seemed that the tribe considered Berry less than savory. Also, he did move around alot. I know that he and Mary Jane were living in South Georgia when great-grandma Ethel met great-grandpa Smith. They moved back to Soperton shortly thereafter. Nanny told me this story last year. If you want Christy's story, I can recant it for you. I hope that this information helps you. I just want us all to know our family history. I also have much stuff !
about the Smiths, Driggers, and Lastingers, if you want to hear it. Our Driggers background is quite interesting and eye-openning. I will also look around on the web for that book. It sounds interesting.

rachel, Grandpa Chavis is a hard man to find. The 1st sighting is in the 1900 Jefferson County Ga. census. How does Christy know her info. One thing i have found out is you have to have proof. I get so far to find out its all wrong. It seems to me that some one in the chavis family should have a bible.Iam thinking it might be that Norriss's family in fl. might be the one. I am still looking. Maybe we will find him oneday. anne
