Please let me know if you are still monitoring this site. I am very interested in the Chavis' and have heard that they were Portuguese and another source says French.

I can't really help you with SC or MS, but I've been working on a project to document all free blacks in NC before the Civil War and did lots of Chavis last Spring. Many of the surnames I look at came from VA originally and went down to Granville or Warren or Edgecombe counties, NC. If you can give me as much info as you have on this John, I'll check my files. Many Chavis children were apprentices in the carpenter's trade. Most of the Chavis I came across where in NC toward the late 1700s and early 1800s and many stayed there long after the emancipation proclamation. Surnames I've come across so far associated with Chavis are Pettiford, Bass, Anderson, Mayo/Maho, Goings/Gowen. There is a thread going on right now on the Wilkes County, NC message board about the Goings surname being melungeon (which I really don't think they are, at least not the ones associated with Chavis.) Feel free to email me.

My great, great grandmother's name was Parzeda(if it's spelled right on the marriage certificate) Chavis. It appears that her father was born in Mississippi but I cannot find her name anywhere else so I don't know what his name would be. She was born in Illinois and married a Harrison.
