Sonia,
thanks you for responding. It has been so long since I posted that I had almost forgotten about it.
I would be glad to share what I have found with you.I am trying to get it organized at this point.
I do have a possible explanation for your family claiming they are Cherokee....I will have to look up the exact dates but ,sometime in the early to mid 1900's many of theLumbee were relocated to a reservation belonging to the Eastern Band of the Cherokee.THe Government renamed these Lumbee..."Northern Cherokee". It was not a harmonious merging, from what I have read. There were definite language and cultural barriers. Most of the Lumbee left the Cherokee Rez as soon as opportunity allowed. But of course, some probably stayed, marrying into the Cherokee tribe or just found a way to comfortably coexist.
I will write again soon. Do you have an email that I can reach you at?
Beth

Elizabeth,
Your research is very interesting. I come from the Chavis/Harrell/Harris/Fullenwilder connection and it is really difficult to figure out who's who when there were so many intermarriages amongst my ancestors. We have the Chavis's with maiden names Chavis-Harrell and Harrell's with maiden names Harrell-Chavis and so on. Most in my family seem to think that we are decendants of Cherokee, but I have remained skeptical about this for some time, given the history of the tribal peoples, and the banding/disbandments of smaller tribes with larger tribes for protection. My Chavis/Harrell ancestors come from Columbia, SC.
I've read quite a bit about the Melungeons from a site I can't seem to locate today, and I've thought often about the Lumbee and would like to learn more about the PeeDee. My ancestors come from Columbia, SC and I'm really interested in our ethnic origins. Could you write to me offline and suggest some leads?
Kindest regards,
Sonia

Your best source may be some of the older folks I've spoken with. Bethina is one that comes to mind. I don't know Berthina's last name but she is Lizzie Fullenwilders daughter and lives in Ohio. I can get her phone number.

Hi Darryl,
Could you write to me offline. I would be interested into talking to you more and perhaps you can tell me how I can get a copy of the death certificates for Polly and Henry. This is really interesting.

Time and time again I come back and revisit this board to see whats new. Your last name "Harrell" in response to a Chavis message immediately caught my attention. My family is full of Chavis and Harrells that originated from Columbia, SC. I'd be interested in knowing what your father can add to the Chavis-Harrell connection as well.
Kindest regards,
Sonia
