My Harley listed in my gen. was submitted as b. 1888. This Harley b. 1881 was a widow when d. and sometimes people give wrong birth date when supplying info on death cert. not meaning to, just really didn't know, especially if he was living with grandchildren etc.he was in his 70's when died.. Hoping someone will know this Harley, My Harley had bro Lonnie, sister Minnie and Eliz. Eliz d young a teen after birth of my grandmother Bessie Mae Chavis b. 3-15-1903 in Conway.
Sarah Frances d. in Pembroke 1913, living with nephew Geo Hatcher bur. St Annah's. We have been searching for over 10 yrs for info on Chavis side. My uncle is ill, and wants to get on Lumbee Tribal Roll bef. he dies. Although his b. cert says Indian, it doesn't say what kind of tribe. With Eliz. dying young and Frances dying when my grandmother was 12, my grandmother has little documentation except she is listed as mulatto along with my mom on 1920 census for Marl Co S.C.
birth cert not issued in SC. until 1915, my gram b. 1903.We are almost positive Alex. Chavis was b. in Robeson Co.then his family moved to Conway, he & sarah came then to Marl co to live. I don't know where Alex Chavis died but Sarah was a widow when she died.
Thank you

I ran across your association with Thomas Chavis, VA 1650 on Roots Web message board dated a while back. I too can trace my Chavis/Chevis/Chevin et al roots back to Bartholomew Chavis (born ca. 1680-85)). Although most Chavis' genealogists are of the opinion that Bartholomew was a grandson of the orphan Thomas (through his son Willilam) no one has been able to substantiate it with any records. Do you have anything? I do have documentation showing Bartholomew being in "old Albemare, VA". He seems to have later migrated and settled in NC. I would be interested in anything you might have on Bartholomew.

to be related to my line. I posted a while back some information I had on
Eli Chavis's family. His son Jesse B. Chavis compiled it. I have a copy of

willing to help me... I will be honest, I dont have alot and what I have most
is word of mouth, I am hopeing to make a trip to SC sometime this year to do
some searching of my own, But will have to wait and see, as I live in
Oklahoma, and that is a good drive,,,,

I have been working on the Abner Chavis line. His wife , Mary Ann Revels is a descendant of John Hammons of Robeson Co. , who is my 5th greatgrandfather. I would love to know more about Abner's children. I have a copy of the roll of Saddletree Church of Robeson Co. and Jordan Chavis is listed as a church leader. His ggfather , Samuel Hammons , gave the land for the church which in 1878 "separated out all the non-white members. Would be happy to share what I have and am especially interested in Leander Chavis. Have you seen the picture of Abner with his sons and son-in-laws that was published recently in the Carolina Indian Voice ? You can see the picture on the Lumbee site. The picture has also been placed on a t-shirt , which I bought before I realized who the men were. Helen
Attention Chavis Researchers with Robeson Co NC Roots!
July 10th, 2001 the Robeson County Heritage Book Committee will be having
their meeting at 7:00 pm in the McLean Room of the Robeson County Public
Library in Lumberton, NC. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
The Robeson County Heritage Book will be written by hundreds of people who
submit stories on their Robeson County connected ancestors. We encourage
descendants of the Chavis family from Robeson Co NC to submit stories on your
Robeson
Co NC ancestors. If you do not put your family's story in the book then no
one else probably will. You don't have to be a Rhodes Scholar to write a
story. You can make your stories just as elaborate, or just as simple, as
you wish.
If you are interested in this project and would like to be placed on the
mailing list to receive a brochure [brochures should be in from the publisher
by late July], then send us your name and smailing address to the e-mail
address listed below:
