I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. I have a newspaper article that states Leon Chavez resigned asa deputy constable a few days before his death but implies he may have been killed by enemies on 9 Dec 1894. I have not had time to do further research. If you have additional info please let me know. If you post your mailing address I will send you the article.

From the Rio Rancho Observer, April 28, 2005 -- Don Bullis writes about New Mexico history in his column Ellos Pasaron Por Aqui (they passed by here). This article is about Colonel Jose Francisco Chavez (Chaves) born in 1833 and died 1904 in New Mexico: his grandfather, Francisco Xavier Chaves (first Mexican governor of New Mex1ico in 1822), his father Mariano Chavez.
