Artisan Alfredo Chavez Was a Master at Adobe Restoration
By Lloyd Jojola
Journal Staff Writer
For years, North Valley craftsman Alfredo "Fecho" Chavez built or restored fogóns— traditional Spanish rounded, corner fireplaces— in area homes, hotels, churches, or in places, such as Casa Vieja and Al Monte's.
The self-taught artisan is also known for old adobe home restoration work and as a teacher who passed on his legacy to his grandsons, Robert and Vincent Herrera, his family said.
Chavez died Monday after suffering a heart attack, his family said. The Los Ranchos de Albuquerque resident was 86.
"He is the reason I love Southwestern (architecture)," Ron Glaser wrote upon the passing of Fecho Chavez.
"He is a great teacher. Fecho taught many. He took strangers in and put them to work."
Fecho Chavez saved Glaser's family from a burning house when Glaser was 3 years old, he said. At a young age, Chavez gave him a job when he needed one and taught him construction trades.
Chavez was a humble man to which money meant little, said Rose Marie Chavez, his sister-in-law.
Locals might remember him selling Christmas trees, wreaths and rope garlands at the corner of his property, she said.
"And when he could no longer do it, he let other people use his property, use his frontage there, to sell," Rose Marie Chavez said. "Maybe they'd give him a Christmas tree, and he was happy.
"He was very, humble. He would go out of his way to do anything for anybody."
Chavez lived in the Fourth Street NW and Chavez Road home where he was born. Chavez Road is named for his father, Nick. They are part of the Chavez family that traces back to Don Pedro (Gómez) Durán y Chaves, one of the founders of Santa Fe, reads a November 1985 Albuquerque Journal profile of Fecho Chavez.
Fecho Chavez was about 12 when a neighbor, Angelo Giardetti, started taking him to Santa Fe to repair fireboxes in locomotive engines, the profile said.
As Giardetti became known for his home fireplaces, Chavez learned alongside.
Chavez also designed cabinets and doors, performed plastering and was known for some fine decorative moldings in the restoration of old adobes, the profile said.
When Casa Vieja underwent restoration as a home, he shaped the decorative trim at the windows and fireplaces, according to the profile. He built a fireplace at Al Monte's.
"Sometimes, I don't even measure," Chavez told the Journal about his work.
He also worked on the restoration of the Blandina convent and helped remodel the arches at San Felipe de Neri Church, both in Old Town.
At the Crafts of Yesteryear exhibit at the 1985 State Fair, he built a miniature model of an old adobe hacienda, which was placed on display at the old Goldwater's department store.
"He was very artistic," Rose Marie Chavez said, mentioning the freehand abstract drawings he made in his free time. He was always working on something, she said, doing anything to keep busy.
"Fecho was a hard worker and always had a project to do," Glaser said.
A funeral Mass for Chavez was celebrated Friday at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. Internment took place at Sunset Memorial Park.
Chavez was preceded in death by his wife, Lila. He is survived by numerous family and friends.
