Hi Jeanette. Not having seen the genealogies of all the NM governors who were Chavez - I'd speculate that all were not from the same direct lineal family, but rather from the extensive Chavez CLAN in NM. I've seen records for a few Estanislao Chavez' in the 1800s in NM while researching my own Chavez tree - not sure who this Estanislao's paternal antecedents were - surely not all four governors mentioned (and maybe none). Given Estanislao's lawyer occupation, I have an idea which one he may be - let me know if you'd like to pursue that (you have my home email address).

The following was taken from the book "From the Mountain to the Sea", about my husband's grandfather. As it mentions that he is descended from a very prominent family of NM, I am wondering if anyone has more information on the men that are mentioned. So far, I have not found them in my research.
"Estanislao V. CHAVEZ, a prominent Los Angeles lawyer, has spent all his life in the Southwest, and before coming to California was prominent in the law, public affairs and the democratic party in new Mexico. He is descended from a very prominent family of New Mexico, and those especially prominent were: Francisco Javier Chavez, governor of the province of New Mexico in the years 1822-23, and the first governor under the Mexican government: Antonio Jose
Chavez, who was governor in 1828-31: Mariano Chavez, who was acting governor in 1835, and Jose Chavez, who was acting governor in 1845. "
Mahalo,
Jeanette

It seldom surprises me, but there is one Hispanic name (Col. Jose Francisco Chavez - a relative) and 10 Anglo names during a time period (mid-1800s) when NM was at least 65%+ Hispanic. The "modern" history of NM spans 214 years (1598-1821) of Spanish rule and only 91 years (1912-2003) of Anglo (U.S.A.) rule - and the Native American history was much longer than either of these two regimes. A reader of NM history would think that it was almost nil until 1846.
