The best place to start is with what you know. Your Mother, your Father, your grandfathers, your grandmothers.....etc. From there, start talking with your relatives, especially the older ones. Find out all that they know. Your Chavez family probably was Catholic so it will be easy to trace them through the Archdiocese Records. Find out what parish your family lived in and go from there. Are you in Albuquerque? If you are, then a visit to the Special Collections library on Central @ Edith will keep you very, very busy. The Santa Fe Archdiocese Archives are on microfilm there. If you are not in Albuquerque, you can order the Archdiocese records through your local Family History Center. I will be glad to be of any assistance to you.
My Chaves family is in Albuquerque and I will be happy to give you some pointers.
