Surname: Chavez, Archuleta
-------------------------
I am looking for more information on the following Chavez, especially:
Who were her parents? I have encluded a lot that I know about her, her
husband and her children so that you may be able to put her in context.
María de la Encarnacion CHÁVEZ was born in 1754 in Nuevo Mexico.1,2,3 Maria
was my 5g-grandmother. Her marriage record does not state parents. The
baptismal records of her children do not show grandparents, parents of
either her or her husband. A good guess would be that she was born in the
Rio Abajo, some where around Alburquerque.
It is possible that she was a g-grand daughter or possibly a 2g-grand daughter
of don Fernando Duran y Chávez through one of his six sons. Other possibilities
are the that she descended from either Juan de Chaves Medina, a colonist
from Zacatecas or Miguel de Figueroa Nuñez de Chávez, a Velasco colonist
from Puebla.
She resided at Santa Cruz de la Cañada in 1822 in Nuevo Mexico.4 At that
time she was listed as Encarnacíon Chaves, age 64, a widow, with her grandson
Seledón and 2 Indian servants, Juan Antonio, age 19 and María Refugio,
age 18. This grandson was likely José Celedón Archuleta, born 2 March 1812,
the son of María's youngest son Tomás and his wife, Ana María Valdez. A
year later in the 1823 census, also in Santa Cruz, it seems María is listed
as Encarnacíon Chabes, age 54, a widow with adopted children Juan Antonio
Archuleta, age 25; Jose Antonio Archuleta, age 20; María del Refugio, age
18 and José Antonio Archuleta, age 1.
She was married to Rodrigo Ramon ARCHULETA on 1 May 1781 in Alburquerque,
Nuevo Mexico.5,6 Testigos were Victorio Archuleta and Barbara Gomez. Official
was Fr. José Palacio. Rodrigo Ramon ARCHULETA was born on 17 Mar 1747 in
Santa Cruz de la Cañada, Nuevo Mexico.7 The 1790 census indicates he was
born in 1742. It could be a transcribing error with the 7 mistakenly written
as a 2. Ramon, my 5g-grandfather, was the son of Juan Antonio Archuleta
and Maria Martin Valerio Fernandez. He was baptized on 17 Mar 1747 in Santa
Cruz de la Cañada, Nuevo Mexico.8 His padrinos were Pedro Sanchez and Michaela
Quintana. He was padrino for Ascencio Archuleta on 18 Feb 1762 in Santa
Cruz de la Cañada, Nuevo Mexico.9 Padrina was Josepha Archuleta. Parents
of Ascencio were Nicolas Marcos Archuleta and Antonia Simona Madrid. He
was padrino for Jose Francisco Archuleta on 26 Aug 1766 in Santa Cruz de
la Cañada, Nuevo Mexico.9 Padrina was Josepha Archuleta. Parents of Jose
were Diego Archuleta and Maria Madrid. He resided at Ranchos de Atrisco
on 17 Feb 1782.10 He was a witness , with his wife, for the marriage of
Geronimo Chavez and Maria Encarnacion Gonzales. on 9 Apr 1787 in Sandia
Pueblo, Nuevo Mexico. Geronimo was the son of Tomas Chavez and Thomasa
Padilla. Maria was the daughter of Antonio Gonzales and Micaela Sandoval.
He resided at Santa Cruz de la Cananda in 1790.11 Ramon and Maria are listed
on the 1790 census with 4 sons, age 9, 7, 5, and 2 and daugter age 11.
This raises the possibility that Maria was not his first wife, as they
married at ages 39 and 27, respectively, and that the daughter age 11 predates
their marriage. Also interesing is that baptismal records that have been
found indicate the list of children should read: sons age 6 and 2 and daughters
age 8 and 3. There must be other baptimal records I have not found and
perhaps some children died. He was padrino for Pedro Antonio Archuleta
on 5 Jan 1796 in Santa Cruz de la Cañada, Nuevo Mexico.9 Padrina was his
wife, Maria Encarnacion Chavez. Parents of Pedro were Juan Julian Archuleta
and Ana Maria Valdes. He was padrino for Maria Rosa de la Trinidad Archuleta
on 8 Apr 1798 in Santa Cruz de la Cañada, Nuevo Mexico.9 Maria was 11 years
old and was identified as Apache with parents unknown. He was padrino for
Maria de la Encarnacion Garcia on 15 Mar 1801.9 María de la Encarnacion
Garcia, born March 12th, was the daughter of Manuel Garcia Bellaco and
Maria Luisa Serna. He was padrino for Bernaradina Archuleta on 30 Sep 1801
in Santa Cruz de la Cañada, Nuevo Mexico.9 Padrina was his wife Maria Encarnacion
Chavez. Bernardina's parents were Miguel Archuleta and Gertrudis Garcia
de Noriega. He died in 1811. María de la Encarnacion CHÁVEZ and Rodrigo
Ramon ARCHULETA had the following children:
2 i. María Olaya ARCHULETA was born on 11 Feb 1782 in Alburquerque, Nuevo
Mexico.12 The family was living in Ranchos de Atrisco. Padrinos were Maria
Antonia Chavez and her son Jose Lorenzo Sanches. She was baptized on 17
Feb 1782 in Alburquerque, Nuevo Mexico.13 Padrinos were Antonia Chaves
and her son José Lorenzo Sanches. The family was from Los Ranchos de Atrisco.

+4 iii. Don Juan Andres ARCHULETA.
5 iv. Tomasa del Carmen ARCHULETA was born in Jul 1787 in Santa Cruz de

Fresquis, his wife. Todos Espanoles.
