Hello,
This James Chaudoin is my GGGG Grandfather. His daughter Emily had a daughter Julia who married my Great Grandfather John Lee Williamson Jr. The family recently found (also in an old trunk) a recipe for tanning hides, among old papers of John Lee Williamson's. It began as "A Recipe for Tanning Hides. The first thing to be done: soak hard hides until soft. Then to 30 gallons of water, add one peck of lime and one peck of ashes" I was just wondering if this could have been from this old recipe even though it was in Julia's mother in law's handwriting. Do you have the actual recipe or just the receipt for it?
Thanks

I do not know how and if there might be a family connection. We have in our family files that James C. CHAUDOIN was a s/o David C. CHAUDOIN (1766-1839 Marion Co., TN) and Mary DAVID (1773-1853). James C. CHAUDOIN (1795-1837) is said to have married perhaps a Mary or Anne RANKIN, but this is not proven, so is still controversial. We do have in this family a Pleasant CHAUDOIN (1831-1914), s/o Benjamin S. CHAUDOIN (1793-1869 Green Co., KY) & Henrietta GUPTON. The given name of Pleasant is not known to be elsewhere in the family. I note within your message you have the same given name in Pleasant C. DAME. Does any of this perhaps "ring a bell" for you? We are missing maiden names for many wives, so perhaps a CHAUDOIN lady married a DAME fellow.
Audrey

Seeking contact with descendants and/or researchers of James Chaudoin of Jasper, Marion Co TN. I have in my possession a document dated June 23, 1834 which includes a handwritten receipt for the English Bend tanning process recipe. The purchaser of this recipe was James Chaudoin, the seller was John G. Jones.
I descend directly from John Dame, Sr. of Jasper, Marion County TN through his son, Valentine Dame. This document was in an old trunk which has only recently come into my possession. The trunk had belonged to John Dame's grandson, Pleasant C. Dame, who was born circa 1830 in Marion Co TN and died 1901 Laclede Co MO. The document must have been at one time in the possession of either my grx4 grandfather, John Dame, or his son, Valentine Dame, who would have brought it with him to the state of Missouri around 1841. I am not aware of any connection between the Chaudoin and Dame families, other than these families lived fairly close to each other in Marion Co TN in 1830 and the men were apparently tanners by trade.
Can someone please give me a connection between the Dame and Chaudoin families that might explain why this document would have spent the last 174 years in an old trunk belonging to my Dame family? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
