"CHAUDOIN
TEXAS BRANCH
LETTER WRITTEN BY Judge L. E. CHAUDOIN
PAGE 11 PETE OLRYOD MATL
DATED Nov 16, 1981
Davis, Oklahoma
Feb. 2, 1948
Mr. and Mrs. Eliot C. Chaudoin,
I returned home Sunday for Palestine; and, as promised in my letter written there, I am writing you again.
On seeing your name in the telephone directory, I recalled that in 1902 father and I visited a brother of his in Denton Co., Texas, and whsoe named was Henry Chaudoin. According to my recollection, my uncle Henry had 6 daughters and one son whose name was Eliot Odell. The similarity in yours and his names interested me, so I took the liberty to call your residence. The person who answered advised that you were at your office; and, upon being furnished with your number, I called there and was informed that you were busy at the time. So I again dialed your residence, and talked briefly with Mrs. Chaudoin. Due to the heavy snows the bus schedules, between Ft. Worth and Palestine had been suspended so I had planned to remain overnight at the Texas Hotel.
I had hoped to see you, but immediately after talking with Mrs. Chaudoin, announcement was made that the schedules were being resumed and a bus would leave for Palestine at once. I barely had time to get aboard. However, I soon had reason to wish that I had not gotten on the bus.
Everything went well until we got passed (sic) Dallas, where the road became heavily laden with ice and the driver began to experience considerable difficulty in keeping the bus on the pavement. Whenever he stopped to either take on or discharge passengers, it required quite a bit of time and a good deal of skillful manipulation to ge the bus in motion again. It was with a great feeling of relief when we finally arrived in Palestine, with limbs intact.
Now a few words as to the Chaudoin tribe. I know very little about my father's people. But according to the information I have, my great-great grandfather came from Chaudoin, France, a small village in France and named after one of his ancestors, who settled in Canada, where my great-grandfather was born, who upon reaching his majority, migrated to Kentucky, and settled in or near Somerset, which is approximately 30 miles of Bowling Green. There my grandfather was born, the 13th of 14 children there being 13 boys and 1 girl. Of these my [father] and the uncle mentioned above are the only ones I ever saw. I even do not know the names of his others brothers, although I do remember that his sister's name was Mary, which is also the name of my grandmother. Whatever became of the 12 brothers and sister, I never knew. However, I do know they have children and grandchildren scattered in several of the western and Southwestern states.
For instance, Joe Chaudoin resides in Clifton, NM, and is Sheriff. Henry Chaudoin, evidently a son of one of my father's older brothers, is city manager of Norman, Oklahoma. Then there's Lesly J. Chaudoin of Marlinger, Texas, who served a numer of years there as District Judge. Jacob Chaudoin is a minister of the Gospel and pastor of the Baptist Church in Duncan, Oklahoma.
It appears that wherever you find a Chaudoin, he has a good position or job, and doing quite well with himself and family. Of course, this is not to be construed as pinning a bouquet on myself or 'tootin my own horn" notwithstanding I have always been able to with with head above water even if the going did get a bit rough at times.
I am 88 years young, bald, and wear store bought teeth when I am not carrying them in my pocket. I was born in Denton, Texas; but migrated with my father and mother to the wild and wooly Indian territory, at the tender age of 6. Our first place of abode was in a half-dugout, tucked away in the backwoods, where the owls hooted eerie in the dark hours of the night, and song-birds made music in the daytime.
The first school I attended was made of logs and we had hewn hickory logs for seets. My teacher was large two fisted red haired Irishman, who upon the least provocation displayed a most violent temper that sounded for all the world like a raging ______ hissing in the distance. He demanded, and usually received from his pupils perfect lessons at the business end of a dogwood switch, which he kept an abundant supply at all times within easy reach.
I could go on Mr. Chaudoin, and elaborate on my boyhood days in the Indian territory, but I am not sure you would be interested.
So., I would be very glad to here (sic) from you, telling me a bit about yourself, and anything also which yo think I ought to known.
With best regards to you and your family, I am,
Yours sincerely,
L. E. Chaudoin
Judge L. E. Chaudoin"

The judge may be right about the Canadian connection, but the part about his great-grandfather settling at Somerset, Ky. is a little hazy. William (and his children) is the only Chaudoin we have found in Pulaski County (Somerset), Ky and surely he came from Virginia and not Canada. Sure do wish the judge had told us the names of his grandfather and great-grandfather. The old boy must be pretty active___riding a bus around at age 88.

This is very interesting. My grandparents and great grandparents lived
in Green Co. Ky, about an hour or so from Somerset. I never did know
anything about my ggfather's brothers and sisters or where they lived.
Just wondering if there is any connection there at all. Planning to do
some investigating!

CHAUDOIN BULLETIN / MESSAGE BOARD POST
Hello CHAUDOIN researchers:
We have now had 5 participants in our CHAUDOIN, etc. Y-DNA PROJECT. However, all men participating do not bear the CHAUDOIN surname, so we are still in the dark as to how those bearing the CHAUDOIN surname may or may not match with others. In other words we do not have any base DNA participants for the CHAUDOIN surname or even SHADOWEN, SHADOWENS, SHADOAN, etc. who claim descendancy from Francois CHAUDOIN. You may check this out at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~grannyapple/CHAUDOINetc DNA/RESULTS.html
or access via:
http://tinyurl.com/488xe
We have our first participant bearing the CHAUDRON surname, so at the present that person stands alone. His results do not match with any other participants.
We need CHAUDOIN, SHADOWEN, SHADOWENS, SHADOAN, etc. men who bear one of the surnames and who deem themselves to be descended from Francois CHAUDOIN to participate. Some/One of the SHADDEN/SHADDAN participants may be a match for CHAUDOIN, but until we get some known representatives to participate, we cannot go further. Are there any CHAUDOIN, SHADOWEN, SHADOWENS, SHADOAN individuals willing to participate for your branch? Sometimes various family members share the cost to sponsor an individual. Remember: DNA used is called junk DNA and does not give away medical DNA tendencies, which some tend to believe.
If interested, please visit:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~grannyapple/CHAUDOINetc DNA/DNA HOME.html
or access via:
http://tinyurl.com/488xe
So, if we are to prove CHAUDRON & CHAUDOIN are not related and that our ancestor Francois CHAUDOIN is not a CHAUDRON descendant, we must have some CHAUDOIN participants...and that person must be a male bearing the CHAUDOIN surname or one of its variants who has a paper trail back.
If you have "Real Player" or the like, you might find this short film very interesting. It is entitled: "Did she marry her cousin?" Click on this website. Sometimes a commercial comes up first, then the presentation. You might find this interesting.

Yeah! It was good to hear from you. My mother in law was Iona Chaudoin
Wallace. Her parents were Samuel H. & Martha (mattie) Davis Chaudoin.
I'm trying to get names and how they are kin on the pictures that Iona
left. Some she wrote names on and some she didn't. Also Ella Pierce
Wallace (Iona's mother in law) kept journals during the late 1930's.
I'm trying to go through them and match up info with pictures. Will be
glad to share information with you.
Who was Joseph Chaudoin's mother and father?

After closely looking at the picture, I think some of the people may not
be identified correctly. I have seen the photo before in my
grandparents house, and may have others that will help. I have moved
recently, and need to find them, so it may take a few weeks.
I do know that Charlie is next to Oakley, directly behind Joe Daniel.
The tall, unknown male next to Arthur, I may be Clarence, with his wife,
Sarah (Davis) Chaudoin, next to him (woman with glasses/short hair).
Although I can't see enough to tell for sure, my grandmother had short
dark hair, so I am pretty sure that is her. Their son, (my dad) Joseph
W Chaudoin ( they called him Dub) is directly between them and just
behind Rual.
I'll show this picture to my sister, brother and mom this weekend to be
sure.

Dear CHAUDOIN family:
I have some family photos shared by Bonnie Wallace on my websites
containing
CHAUDOIN & JUDD and perhaps other family members of whom you may be
aware.
I am in need of validation / clarification of identities on some of the
photos on these sites, as Bonnie
indicates the identifications were made by another. I thought possibly
some
of you might be able to help or put me in touch with someone who might
be
able to do so. Will be adding more to the site, so visit back
frequently.
Would you please look at these sites and see if you can help me? Would
appreciate anything you might validate or add to. It really helps when
you
give a little extra...like maiden names of ladies and their married
names,
names of spouse of both men and women, parents names, birthdates, death
dates, places of residence(s), etc. Anything that will help in
identifying
folks for me.

It was great to hear from you Bonnie. Joe Daniel was my great
grandfather, and Clarence Edwin was my grandfather.
If my memory serves me right, Uncle Lonnie was also married to Mintie
Cook after Ivy Sherrill. They lived on the farm next to my
grandfather's.
Aunt Martha married a Judd. I'll check with my sister, but I am pretty
sure that she is Rural and Dalton's mother from that picture.
Aried Arnold and Arthur B are twins.

Yeah! It was good to hear from you. My mother in law was Iona Chaudoin Wallace. Her parents were Samuel H. & Martha (mattie) Davis Chaudoin.
I'm trying to get names and how they are kin on the pictures that Iona left. Some she wrote names on and some she didn't. Also Ella Pierce Wallace (Iona's mother in law) kept journals during the late 1930's. I'm trying to go through them and match up info with pictures. Will be glad to share information with you.
Who was Joseph Chaudoin's mother and father?
Hello CHAUDOIN researchers:
We have now had 5 participants in our CHAUDOIN, etc. Y-DNA PROJECT.
However, all men participating do not bear the CHAUDOIN surname, so we are
still in the dark as to how those bearing the CHAUDOIN surname may or may
not match with others. In other words we do not have any base DNA
participants for the CHAUDOIN surname or even SHADOWEN, SHADOWENS, SHADOAN,
etc. who claim descendancy from Francois CHAUDOIN. You may check this out
at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~grannyapple/CHAUDOINetc%20DNA/RESUL
TS.html
or access via:
http://tinyurl.com/488xe
We have our first participant bearing the CHAUDRON surname, so at the
present that person stands alone. His results do not match with any other
participants.
We need CHAUDOIN, SHADOWEN, SHADOWENS, SHADOAN, etc. men who bear one of the
surnames and who deem themselves to be descended from Francois CHAUDOIN to
participate. Some/One of the SHADDEN/SHADDAN participants may be a match
for CHAUDOIN, but until we get some known representatives to participate, we
cannot go further. Are there any CHAUDOIN, SHADOWEN, SHADOWENS, SHADOAN
individuals willing to participate for your branch? Sometimes various
family members share the cost to sponsor an individual. Remember: DNA used
is called junk DNA and does not give away medical DNA tendencies, which some
tend to believe.

So, if we are to prove CHAUDRON & CHAUDOIN are not related and that our
ancestor Francois CHAUDOIN is not a CHAUDRON descendant, we must have some
CHAUDOIN participants...and that person must be a male bearing the CHAUDOIN
surname or one of its variants who has a paper trail back.
If you have "Real Player" or the like, you might find this short film very
interesting. It is entitled: "Did she marry her cousin?" Click on this
website. Sometimes a commercial comes up first, then the presentation. You
might find this interesting.

Something that many discussion lists do at the beginning of the year is to
ask for a (re)posting of lineages, so here is my husband's ancestral line

Dear CHAUDOIN family:
I have some family photos shared by Bonnie Wallace on my websites containing
CHAUDOIN & JUDD and perhaps other family members of whom you may be aware.
I am in need of validation / clarification of identities on some of the
photos on these sites, as Bonnie
indicates the identifications were made by another. I thought possibly some
of you might be able to help or put me in touch with someone who might be
able to do so. Will be adding more to the site, so visit back frequently.
Would you please look at these sites and see if you can help me? Would
appreciate anything you might validate or add to. It really helps when you
give a little extra...like maiden names of ladies and their married names,
names of spouse of both men and women, parents names, birthdates, death
dates, places of residence(s), etc. Anything that will help in identifying
folks for me.

Does anyone know the identity (parents, husband, etc.) and anything more
about Venise CHAUDOIN as pictured on this website:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~grannyapple/CHAUDOIN/Data%20V.html
She is perhaps the "Venice Chaudoin" as named in "Chaudoins of Virginia" by
Gloria Cowan Smith. This "Venice Chaudoin" is given as dau/o Wallace Avery
Chaudoin & Cordelia Pierce. Would like to double check the spelling of her
name and family connections, as there are numerous printing errors in this
book. Does anyone have additional personal knowledge or research
information?

Can anyone identify the parentage of this "Thomas Chaudoin" as pictured on
this site:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~grannyapple/CHAUDOIN/Data%20T.html
Is he the same Thomas who is said to have gone to Illinois?
Help appreciated.

We have Francis Chaudoin born in Germantown Goochland,Virginia as the first
of the line, son John Shadden Chaudoin born in Chesterfield Co Va, then Thomas
born Robertson Co Tn, then Byron born in Lavaca Co Tx and Wallace, Lavaca Co
Tx. There are so many ways it was spelled on census records it is
difficult to trace sometimes.

Hello Cassidy. It is too late for your paper, but my sister and I made a trip to Halletsville Texas and went to the courthouse to look up info on Wallace A Chaudoin, our gggrandfather. All we could find in the criminal and other court records was Wallace was charged with shooting into a man's house without his permission. There was one charge of horse theft, but it turned out the man purchased the colt from Wallace and never paid, so Wallace took it back. No record of anything more sinister. Byron Chaudoin married Mary Jane Creasman(Crissmon, Chrisman). Byron was listed as a farmer on census records. He died in Civil War on a ship and buried in Maryland. He was on the confederate side. No record he was a doctor. His father, Thomas Chaudoin was well know and owned a large number of acres around Halletsville. He possibly was at the Alamo also. If you Google his name in republic of Texas you can see some articles with his name listed. Wallace was blind in his later!
years. My mother remembers him as a child staying at their house and whittling, telling stories of his mother and grandmother, supposedly Cherokee from Tn. Wallace Creasman was Mary Jane's relative, we aren't clear exactly the relationship, as his wife Biddy Scrimsher, never had children. After her death, she is buried in an abandoned cemetary in Morovia Tx, he remarried and had children in his old age. Unfortunately courthouses burned and records were lost. If you get the opportunity to travel to Hallettsville, go to the courthouse clerk of court. They have the actual records for the Chaudoin's that are over 150 yrs old in the vault and you can actually handle them and read some history. Who are your parents, grandparents, etc.? Please feel free to write pkobleur(a)aol.com. The search continues....
