You might check the lineage of Joseph Daniel Chaudoin, who was my great,
grandfather. All of my Chaudoin relatives are buried in Macedonia
cemetery. Just curious, and I may have asked this before, but is your
husband one of my cousins? Vicki Chaudoin Kamerer, dau of Joseph
Washington Chaudoin, son of Clarence Edwin Chaudoin, who was the son of
Joe Daniel Chaudoin.

Does anyone know the lineage for Virginia?
She is probably the one who died from consumption in the early posting of
her obituary, but it never gave any lineage information. Was her mother
perhaps the Polly Shaudoin living with the CHAUDOIN ladies in the 1860
Census? Who is Polly? Would assume she was a CHAUDOIN by marriage.

VIRGINIA CHAUDOIN
Died of consumption, in Goochland, December 27, Miss Virginia Chaudoin. If
the object of life be to prepare for an eternal state of being beyond the
grave, and to incite others to that preparation, then may our sister be said
fully to have fulfilled her mission--though cut off in the morning of her
day. In its first hours she commenced her work. Though of an amiable,
natural disposition, feeling the need of an atonement for sin, she applied
to a Saviour all sufficient, rejoiced in His forgiving love, and cheerfully
performed His service. But soon our Father saw that her work was done, and
sent for her to Himself. And gloriously impressive was the scene of her
farewell to earth. She fully realized its solemnity; and yet, instead of
viewing death as the grim monster, he appeared to her as the kind friend,
who had come to carry her home to heaven. In her non language, all was
peace. With a mingled earnestness and deliberation, which was sublimely
eloquent, she impressed on each member of the family and each attending
friend, the claims of religion and its bright reward, while loving messages
were sent to each friend who was absent, and the smallest act of kindness
was gratefully acknowledged. May each one thus addressed profit by her
exhortations--follow her in life as she followed Jesus, triumph with her in
death, and at last, reign with her in immortal glory.

"Kittie M. Chaudoin
Dear Herald.....
Let me, in this sketch, chronicle the death of Miss Kittie M. Chaudoin, the
7th of June, at the old homestead of Lewis Chaudoin, in Goochland county,
Virginia. She was born, raised, lived a little more than 75 years, and
died, in the same house. Grandfather never lived, after his going into
that, in any other. My aunt was, I believe, after the death of old brother
Lansin Hall last year, the only surviving member of what once was the
"Licking Hole Church" in Goochland County, near which Elder Lewis Chaudoin
lived.

"W. N. Chaudoin was probably the Rev. W. N. Chaudoin of Tennessee and
Georgia, the son of John Mimms Chaudoin (s/o Lewis Chaudoin)."

It appears that the person transcribing the original obituary flipped the
date when transcribing the obituary that appeared in the paper dated 1874.
It should have read: October 10, 1874...not 1847. R. S. Sanders seemed to
reach that same conclusion on his review of the 1850 Census. This is backed
by R. S. Sanders "1850" listing of the census and a review of online Census
Records by me [ASH]. Catherine "Kitty" was very much alive at least until
1870, so 1874 appears to be the correct death date for Kitty.
He indicates that Kitty Chaudoin was dau/o Lewis Chaudoin, and Sally Davis,
was another daughter Lewis Chaudoin who had married John S. Davis on 17 Feb
1835.

Sarah appears to have been her sister who evidently died between 1860-1870.
Polly is a nickname usually for Mary. It is not known who this Polly in
1860 is.
Mary A. of 1870 is probably the Polly of 1860.
If anyone has additional information please feel free to help.

This obituary was handwritten out, and perhaps not in the script of R. S.
Sanders. This is probably Matilda Ann (Wilkerson) Chaudoin, the first wife
of Lewis Chaudoin, Jr. who died perhaps on 19 April 1832. It sounds as
though she perhaps died of consumption (T.B.).
The "little son" is not named, and I do not have his name. Can anyone
supply that information?
According to my (ASH) records, Lewis, Jr. was s/o Lewis CHAUDOIN (Sr.) and
Katurah "Catherine" "Kitty" MIMMS. Lewis CHAUDOIN (Sr.) was s/o
Francois/Francis CHAUDOIN & Sarah WEAVER. If anyone has additional
information or corrections to this please let me know.
After Matilda's death, I have that Lewis, Jr. married a Jane E. Nelson, but
I do not know if that is correct. Can someone validate?

"M. A. CHAUDOIN
Died in the county of Goochland, on the 19th ult. of a pulmonary complaint,
Mrs. M. A. Chaudoin, consort of Lewis Chaudoin, junior, after an illness of
nearly two years, which she bore with Christian patience and fortitude. She
professed religion for five years before her death, but was not baptized
until last summer, at which time she was so low, that some of her friends
feared it was unsafe for her to be baptized; but she followed her Lord in
the watery tomb, and was not known to suffer thereby the samllest injury.
On seeing a change in her looks, the night on which she died, some friend
asked her--'What is the matter?,' to which she replied, 'I hope I am dying.'
She was then asked 'if she felt Jesus precious to her.' She answered,
'Yes.' And in a few moments expired. She has, we trust, entered into that
rest where troubles are no more. But she has left behind her a kind
husband, and one little son, besides a number of friends and relatives to
lament her death. May we all remmber that we must shortly follow."

Original Copies of Records (Abstracted by Audrey with some notes added.)
Spellings/information as seen within the documents cited vary.
I believe that the fancy ending on Shadowen in records began looking like a
"s" and therefore the name perhaps went from Shadowen to Shadowens. Since
many of our folks of early year were illiterate (reading and spelling of
their surnames included) they took the spelling of the clerk/recorder or how
it was pronounced and went with that spelling as their children began
schooling. Note within these records we have Claiborn's surname spelled
Chadowens, Shadowen, & Shadowens. We have his given name spelled: Claiborn
and Claborn. His own signature looks like he signed: Claiborn Shadowens.
One record below seems to show "D. Claiborn Shadowens." Perhaps someone can
help us out and give his line of descent from Francois Chaudoin, as they
know it to be.
