I note that some say her maiden name was Elizabeth CHAUDOIN, being dau/o Henry CHAUDOIN/SHADOWYN & Nancy PURVIS, yet the above resource says she was Mrs. Elizabeth SHADOWEN who married Hugh. Anyone have additional information?

Looking for information on Serepta Carolyn Shadowin (b. 10/31/1831 in Tennessee, d. 8/3/1894, buried in Mt. Bethel Cemetery in Cherokee County, Alabama, along with her husband William Little). I believe Serepta (a/k/a Sarepth) is the daughter of James C. Chaudoin (mother unknown), and was born in South Carolina.
William and Serepta are my gggrandparents. Their children included: John Wesley, James Newton (my ggrandfather), Mary J., George, and William. All the children were born in Alabama.
Anyone out there have any info?
In reply to the "Chaudron" ancestor theory, Audrey has pointed out to us
that the Chaudoin name stands on its own in France. In looking at some
french genealogy sites, I found the name of "Elisabeth Chaudoin" born
circa 1670. I have no idea if this Elisabeth is related to our Francis
(aunt?), but it does show the name Chaudoin in France prior to what we
believe is Francis' immigration. . Unfortunately, I do not have a
genetic memory for the French language, but the sites do not appear to
have any further information on Elisabeth, such as parents or siblings.
The sites that I found Elisabeth at are:
http://www.chez.com/genwww/jlsoler/dat138.htmhttp://perso.libertysurf.fr/paul.laredo/benji/BENg90.htm#1886http://www.ma-genealogie.org/borri/familles/index3-5.htm#CHAUDOIN
I also found one site that lists a "Jeanne Chaudoin" who married Antoine
Olive circa 1470 in Provence, France. If this is correct this puts the
Chaudoin name much further back. There is no other information as to
Jeanne's parents or siblings. This site is at
http://www.ma-genealogie.org/courbon/familles/index3.htm
These are interesting clues to the Chaudoin name.

Emmaliza Chaudoin married Bennett Powers about 1849, probably in Whitley or Lincoln County, KY. Emmaliza was born about 1830, probably Whitley County. Both her given and surnames may be listed as a variant of above. Bennett Powers, born about 1828 in Knox County, KY. The only child of this union I have found is Precilla, born Nov 1854, married James F Oaks 1871 in Lincoln County, KY. Emmaliza is possible daughter of Samuel O and Prescilla Chandler Chaudoin. Samuel was son of Andrew M Chaudoin. He was born either just before or just after Andrew M migrated to Green County, KY from VA about 1795. Samuel O appears to have moved around quite a bit. He is found in Lincoln about 1826, in Whitley about 1827, IN, and died in Lincoln County about 1872. Any information for Emma will be greatly appreciated. Gene Martin

I am really looking for the deVendel line or whether the surname is being carried. At any rate I am looking for anything I can get. I am pretty new at thie internet search--my mother Patricia at one time had Napoleon letter as one of the deVendel´s, Paul Emile deVendel was a courrier of some sort--or so the story goes. thank you

Thank you for your response, however, no seasoned Chaudoin researcher to date has been able to verify or prove the information that you shared that our Francis Chaudoin was indeed Francois Chaudron. Even seasoned Chaudoin researchers have never found the Chaudoin surname as a variant of Chaudron. In fact, that surmise has been considered a fallicy by many based upon the belief at one time that a Francois Chaudron was indeed our Francis Chaudoin. It was found by our seasoned researchers in French records that the Francois Chaudron whose birth and lineage is given as our Francois Chaudoin actually died (French records) as a small child in France and thus could not be our immigrant ancestor, Francis Chaudoin, as stated in some genealogies. Since the surname Chaudoin is said to have been a legitimate surname in France, and thus, can stand on its own, rather than saying in America that it used to be Chaudron, we will have to do further research to see if he is connected to th!
e already known French surname of Chaudoin or if indeed his surname is a variant of another. However, if you have records to validate your statement, I know that those of us who have been searching for his true lineage would be delighted to learn more. If you can only validate your find with IGI records of another researcher or with a genealogy passed on by another, you may wish to do more researching before accepting as fact what you say. By genealogists it would be considered merely hearsay if one cannot back up their statements with original records. Just a word of caution as you proceed, but if you have the proof, many of us would be delighted to learn more. Thank you for sharing. I hope that we can find the answer to our Francis Chaudoin's French connection, as it is baffling many of us. Perhaps you can help us further.

I can't help you with the French, however, I know that the name"Chaudoin" comes from the name "Chaudron". I have traced the family back to Christophe and Jeanne Daux Chaudron from 1645. As far as I can tell, they were from Silly-de-Long Oise France. I think the first Chaudron to arrive in the US was Francois Chaudron a/k/a Francis Chaudoin.
Hope this helps!
