Hi again....
Fair warning....this is somewhat long.
It seems from your reply that Chatterton interest is in the family line of Nathan A. & Anne, both b. England. You will want to look at the 1910 census for Pawtucket that I'm looking at.
Nathan A. 75y & wife Anne 78y along with bachelor son Allen W. 51y are enumerated at 26 Kossuth St. and enumerated immediately after are Frederick H. & wife Mary w/ sons Allen and Frederick at 24 Kossuth St.
http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbid=7884&iid=RIT624_144... H&ln=Chatterton&st=d&ssrc=&pid=156964905
Also, this site will give you burial location for both and the bonus of Anne's maiden name:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rigenweb/cemetery/cemetery077.html
>From the above site:
CHATTERTON ANNE WARDLE (WARDLE*)1836 - 10 FEB 1917 PV003
CHATTERTON NATHAN ALLEN 1834 - 5 DEC 1918 PV003
Cemetery PV003 is Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, RI.
"Location: 20 ft east of BLACKSTONE BLVD at TEL pole # 117
38000 burials with 18000 inscriptions from -------- to 1994
Owner: Swan Point Cemetery, 585 Blackstone Blvd., Providence, RI 02906 (401) 272-1314
NOTE: This transcript is from the cemeteries computerized records. map numbers that start with 'C' are cremations done at Swan Point but may not be buried there. This cemetery has been recorded and checked."
Even though you may not know when the arrived from England, Nathan and Anne should be on the 1841 and possibly the 1851 English censuses. You will be able to learn their parents' names and where in England they were born as well as where they are residing in those years. Knowing the rest of their family make-up from the censuses, you could also look on later censuses for their parents & siblings and you can expand you knowledge from there with regards to deaths, marriages of siblings and possible births of neices and nephews for Nathan and Anne back in England. You should also get an idea as to what registration district you might possibly find a marriage for Nathan and Anne from the censuses. Or you may discover that both of families came to the US while Nathan and Anne were still children, in which case you can figure that they met and married over here.
Assuming the 1841 - 1861 censuses indicate by the continued presence of Nathan CHATTERTON & birth family group and Anne WARDLE and her birth family group in England, you might assume that they met and married in England. You need to know that England didn't start registering vitals until the Sept 1837 quarter so while you'll be able to possibly find a marriage, you won't be able to find births for Nathan and Anne. For those you will need to check parish registers to see if/when they were christened. Once you learn from the censuses where they were born, check the library catalog at familysearch.org to see if & what the LDS has filmed for your area of interest. Then you can go into your nearest FHC and borrow the films from Salt Lake.
For marriage for them and other BMD for their birth families go to Free BMD and search. Not all of the GRO index is transcribed into the Free BMD database yet but you can check back if you don't find what you are looking for at first. It beats searching the GRO Index by scrolling through hundreds of feet of microfilm.
I search at Free BMD by indicating the type I'm looking for...BM or D.....I often use just the surname so I catch siblings, too or the occasion where a middle name is used as a given name....and I tic "Phonetic search" to try and take into account any errors at registration or during transcription. You are also required to select either District/All Counties or County/ All Districts. I have the greatest success with County/All District searches so now never check District/All Counties. And then I look in the results for the entries that were made in the registration districts I'm interested in. You will have the county from looking at the censuses.

There is also one user submitted tree at Ancestry linked through to from One World Tree. I hate these because there is NEVER any contact info...always "Contact - Unknown". I don't know how reliable this information is since it's not sourced but it could serve as a source of clues. I've added some comment where I thought it might help/clarify. Here is the info from that:

MARRIAGES - CIANO to HOGAN - Providence Journal. Providence, R.I.: Oct 15, 1989. pg. E-07 - which makes me wonder about the sequencing of the last bit of the above tree. OK....a lot here for RI...wish it was mine but the 1910 censuses with a Frederick son of Nathan & Anne in RI and another Frederick ALSO 1910 married to my Laura BAILEY in NY & the obits from the Projo fairly well clinches it that they are two separate Frederick"s.
Firstly, your deaths that are all before 1957 will be at RI Archives. Anything after that will be at Vital Records and hard to get unless you are a direct relation and then it will cost you $20 per cert.
Rhode Island State Archives
337 Westminster Street
Providence, Rhode Island 02903
Telephone: (401) 222-2353
Fax: (401) 222-3199
Email: reference(a)sec.state.ri.us
Web: www.state.ri.us/archives/ ~~website is poorly designed and pretty much useless from a genealogy point of view.
Open to the public Monday-Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Deaths from about 1856 to 1957. Births and marriages from about 1856 to 1907. On 1 Jan of each year, another year's records are released so 1957/1907 will increase to 1958/1908 next 1 Jan 09. Anything which falls after 1957/1907 must be obtained from the RI Health Dept. / Vital Records.
Archives also has RI State Censuses done on the "5" years from 1865 - 1935 with the exception of 1895 which is MIA.
Obits: If you have at minimum month and year, copies of these can be obtained from the Providence Public Library for a fee. PPL only charges the service fee once per request so if you request 5 obit copies or one, it's still a $5 service fee unless they've changed their fee structure recently.
Photocopies from microfilm of the Providence Journal from the beginning in the 1800's to the present:

Email at pplref(a)provlib.org
The last time I checked, the costs were still a $5 service fee with a charge of $0.20 per page for copies. You make your request with names and dates, they do a look-up and let you know what they found. Because they had a problem with sending the copies to people but never receiving payment, now before they will do the copy you will have to send the $5 and the cost for however many pages of copies they've said your information is contained on. (Before Belo Corp. took over the Providence Journal, there were the traditional obits on one page and there could be a larger personal bio on an adjoining page so at least 2 pages of obit information is possible for obits prior to Belo Corp. taking over.)
If you order your obits, wedding announcements, etc.directly from the Providence Journal all you will get for your money is a text transcript of the information. You will miss out on any photographs that might have accompanied the obit or article and it will cost you approximately the same amount of money.
I also suggest that if these burials are of interest to you that you go to Find A Grave, enter these people into their database at the appropriate cemetery and then click on "Request a photo" to see if a volunteer in the area picks up the request, goes out and takes a photo of the grave and posts it to you entry. A nice way to make a virtual visit and possibly learn some new information. If you find a cemetery not in their database, there are instructions for creating a new database for that cemetery so you can still enter your people.

Hi Debbie,
Well you're certainly right about places of birth being all over the map. I see that I neglected Frederick. Sr.'s year of birth and place in my original post....my bad. I was originally going to make this one reply but it seems you're interest in Nathan & Anne (both b. England) CHATTERTON's line so my second reply to you regards them.
My Frederick.......................
1910, the only census I have him for certain, his birth year figures to abt. 1867 with birth given as in NY. Also NY births for his parents and Frederick, Jr. who, by the way, is incorrectly indexed by Ancestry as having a birth year of 1905 when the image clearly shows him listed as 15 years old in 1910 so 1910 - 15 = abt. 1895 for a birth year.
It's an intriguing possibility that the 1860, 1880 & 1900 as well as the barely legible 1920 schedule are all the Frederick & family I'm seeking despite the 1910 census giving NY for place of birth for Frederick Sr. & Jr. and Frederick Sr's parents. I had looked at those but with the places of birth for the parties involved being so radically different...had it just been Frederick or his father or his mother's place of birth that differed from the 1910, I think I would have taken a closer look.
Upon taking a closer look on genealogy geared sites & coupled with information in the obits I found (see second reply here), I still don't think this could be the Frederick I seek because the Frederick H.(son of Nathan & Anne) along with Mary and sons Allen & Frederick L. appear in 1910 still in Pawtucket, RI still with the same places of birth.
- AND -
I know from the NYC vitals databases at the Italian Genealogy Group site that my Laura BAILEY and her Frederick CHATTERTON were married 19 Nov 1902 MC# 378 Richmond Co aka Staten Island, NY.
However, with the burial info you've given me, I've located widow Laura in 1930 Upstate in Rosendale.
Do you have the link for the burial information?
I'd like to take a look at that and also find contact info to see if I can determine if Laura is also there which seems logical she would be.
I also think that the barely legible 1920 schedule is my Frederick rather than the RI Frederick you found. That still leaves my man missing for several censuses and me guessing as to wife # 1. It may take parting with some $$ and getting the MC from NYC Muni Archives if, after a bit, there is no one else on this board connected to my Frederick CHATTERTON and Laura BAILEY who replies to this post.
Now on to reply 2 which might help you with Nathan.

Hello,
I could be wrong. Does this sound like a possibility?
I looked on the census and on line. I believe that the Nathan Chatterton son Frederick is the same one as your Frederick Chatteron. The family were not consistent in the birthplace.
It seems Pawtucket, Providence Co, Rhode Island might be a place to start.
Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery Frederick D Chatterton D Jan 29, 1930 at Rosedale, Ulster Co, NY
1860 Cumberland, Providence, RI before Frederick was born.
1870 Attleboro, Bristol,
1880 Pawtucket, Providence, RI
It looks like he has a brother Allen W Chatterton, father Nathan born about 1834 in England, mother Ann.
Frederick Sr possibly born about Jan 1866.
Frederick Jr possibly also named Frederick Lincoln Chatterton born about June 1895
I would be interested in learning more about this family since Nathan is from England.
Good Luck,
Debbie Freeman

I've recently discovered a Frederick CHATTERTON who married into a family line I'm researching.
I'm having a lot of difficulty finding him or his son, Frederick, Jr. on censuses other than the 1910 for Richmond Co aka Staten Island, New York or in other Ancestry databases.
I'm looking for some help.
What I know:
Frederick, Sr. was married 2 times according to the 1910 census & the information presented that wife Laura was the mother of 0 children but yet there is 15 yr old Frederick, Jr. in the household.
First wife unknown.
Second wife who appears with him on the 1910 census Staten Island was Laura BAILEY daughter of William J. BAILEY & Teressa P. nee Unknown.
Marriage for Frederick, Sr. and Laura BAILEY 19 Nov 1902 MC# 378 Richmond Co, NY
Frederick, Jr. is shown on the 1910 census as 15 years old making his birth abt. 1895
>From the NYC Death Databases at the Italian Genealogy Group site are two possibilities for the first wife of Frederick, Sr.:
Chatterton, Catherine 22 y d. Aug 25, 1895 Death Cert. #30231 Manhattan [est. year of birth 1872 - 1873]
Chatterton, Mary 34 y d. Aug 13, 1896 Death Cert. #28128 Manhattan [est. year of birth 1861 - 1862]
Can anyone help me to find out more about the two Frederick"s?

There appears to be an error in your Chatterton Family Tree. John Chatterton married Hannah Stott at Lacolle, Quebec in 1816. Their family is much younger and does not match the names you have listed. John and Hannah Stott are reported in the 1860 Census of Oregon, Dane, Wisconsin. They also appear in the 1870 census under the name "Chariton" with their daughter and son-in-law S. D. Kirkpatrick at Brooklyn, Green, Wisconsin.
