[CHATTERTON] Joseph Chatterton of Warrington
by Vera and Dave Chatterton
For Barbara Terrace[ or anyone who thinks there may be a connection to
his family tree]
A good few years back I e-mailed you re a Thomas Chatterton and you
were kind enough to reply but despite a few more forays into the
records I kept coming up against problems. I now have worked out and
checked against records and believe that the confusion on my part comes
from Joseph, the father of Thomas Worrall Chatterton (great great
g.father of my husband) having been married twice.
"Our" Joseph was born in 1822 in Ditton. In 1851 he is in St Paul's
Warrington and a widower with 2 children, Joseph,2 and Elizabeth 5
months. He is living in the same house as Elizabeth Locker,58 and Mary
Locker 10. He is a filecutter.
He later married Mary Worrall and has several children to her before
dying in 1861 at the age of 39. At death he was still a filecutter. One
of his children by Mary was Thomas Worrall Chatterton ,born1853.
In the 1881 census Mary Worrall and her children are listed at a house
in Woolwich. This puzzled me until I checked the neighbours and
discovered that next door was a Joseph Chatterton, 32 so I am surmising
that they were visiting at the time of the census. Thomas W was 27 by
this time and employed on the railways so possibly was able to get free
travel for the family.
I don't know if you are still working on the Chatterton tree or not
but hope that if you are some of this is helpful. If not perhaps you
know of someone else who may be.
Thomas W. Chatterton settled in Liverpool and lived to a good age. His
son Thomas also did and his son Thomas Jackson Chatterton was the
grandfather of my husband, all born and bred in Liverpool.
Regards, Vera Chatterton
