Re: Historical encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Fulton County
HISTORY OF FULTON COUNTY
August 5, 1848, John Woods was married to Lucy A. Chatterton, a native of Virgil Cortland County, NY. Her people arrived in Illinois in 1832. to Mr. and Mrs. Woods were born the following named children: Addie, now Seldon, who died May 13, 1881; Mary L. the wife of J. H. Ross, who died June 1,1894; and Frank C., who resides at Avon, Ill. For nearly forty year Mr. Woods resided on his farm in Greenbush Township, Warren County, but in 1889 removed to Avon, where he made his home until the time of his death, August 4, 1894. Mrs. Woods died March 29, 1898. In common with the rest of his family, Mr. Woods was a Universalist in religious faith, and the lot on which the Universalist Church in Avon is built was his gift to the cause he esteemed so much. In politics he was a Republican.
Looking for information on Chatterton's Orin, Cornelius Jr., Lewis B., and Oliver B. born in New York. Assume (?) they are brothers.
Per Fulton Co. History...Oliver B. Chatterton " native of New York State and was born November 18, 1822. While yet in his teens he came to Fulton County which his parents, Cornelius and Lucy (Ball) Chatterton, borth of whom were born in New York State and were farmers by occupation...
What children did Cornelius and Lucy (Ball)Chatterton have?
This is several years late!

Hi Corky;
Thanks for replying, the only thing I have found on John Chatterton is a land grant in the late 1700s in Ontario. He was granted 500 acres in Elizabethtown Township.
My husbands third cousin Alexander Flannigan (who I have met on line in my search for ancestors) told me that Chatterton, came from New York via Nova Scotia Canada and that he was a rebel - he was not a commissioned officer. It is funny how surnames have changed our surname has changed from a Flanagan (Flanigan) (Michael who married Marian (Mary) Chatterton) to Flanigan and then in the mid 1800s to Flannigan - although at that time I think that there was a split in the family as half the brothers adopted the double n and the others didn't. Still back then not everyone was able to write so I can imagine it was easy for names to have been spelled in different ways.
Alexander also told me that he had found that John Chatterton's wife and daughters were also granted land in Ontario. Don't know if that information is of any help to you.
If all the Chattertons in New York are related I guess in some way you must be a very distant cousin of my husbands.
Thank you for sending a reply, I truly appreciate your help and will pass along the info to Alexander. I will also try to post to the Westchester Co. mailing list.

If your husband's Chatterton ancestors were in Westchester Co., NY before the Revolutionary War then they are most likely descended from Michael Chatterton b. ~1605 in England and is first found in New World records in 1640. To date I have not found a single Chatterton in pre-RW records in the New York, NY area (which includes Westchester Co.) that is not related in some way to our original immigrant ancestor, Michael.
When I first saw your post I looked for a likely John in my records which might possibly be yours but there are so many. Your husband is most likely my cousin but further research is needed to prove it.
I was told for years that my last name was originally spelled with "t's" but an argument between brothers caused my direct line to change the spelling to Chadderdon. I have since concluded from records that the change in spelling happened about the time of the Rev. War. I have decided that the argument was much more than just a tiny quarrel. It was between those in the family who decided to remain loyal to the King and those who sided with the Revolution. Most, but not all, of the Loyalists went to Canada. Some returned later, but my point is that we are all probably related.
There are quite a few records of the Loyalists who went to Cananda. Have you tried posting to the Wastchester Co. mailing list? Some one there may have the information you need.

I have nothing on that line of Chattertons - mine originated in the New Haven area of Connecticut and two of the brothers moved to Vermont after the Revolution -
