Hi Cindy:
While doing family research on Springer's and Pohlman's in Michigan, the name Chatterton does come up. My Grandmother (Ethel Cull) had a brother named Albert and their nephew was Albert Chatterton who lived in Detroit, Mi. There is also an Edith Chatterton who is probably the brother to Albert and she lived in Detroit, Mi. Any connection?

Steve:
I should have read the entire thread before posting my previous message. I have seen reference to William s/o Michael and Jane WOODWARD CHATTERTON, being married to Mary Clark. However, I don't seem to be able to find it in my files right now.
>From the CHATTERTON file of Carolyn Walton I have the following:
Descendants of Michael Chatterton
Generation No. 1
1. MICHAEL1 CHATTERTON was born 1605 in England, and died in Flushing, Westchester Co., New York. He married JANE WOODWARD Abt. 1626. She was born Abt. 1605.
Notes for MICHAEL CHATTERTON:
Michael, born in England in 1605, was the first Chadderdon ancestor in the New World. His father may have been Thomas Chatterton and he might have had a brother William. It is estimated that he married Jane Woodward about 1626 and they had a son, William, born about 1627. Possibly a Puritan, Michael probably immigrated in 1640 on the "Belkan" (or Pied Cow, records are uncertain), arriving at Strawberry Bank, New Hampshire listing his occupation as Yeoman (farmer). "To their delight, when the sea-weary travelers on the Pied Cow disembarked on the west bank of the Piscataqua River in 1630, they found the ground covered with wild strawberries. Thus was founded and named Strawberry Banke, the little settlement that took root around a tidal inlet and grew into the thriving seaport of Portsmouth." The Chatterton family were possibly among the travelers. On 25 May 1640: "The Piscataqua Settlements...the lower river settlement...townspeople of Strawberry Bank...wrote a declaration o!
f union...". The seventh name on this list 20 persons is "Michael Chatterton".
Michael appears in the census of 23 may 1642 as an inhabitant of Westchester County. Apparently marital problems occurred. Records show: "Jane 'ux...Chatterton' was bound by Piscataqua court in 1642 to answer at next court or else go to her husband. (The) order (was) repeated in 1646." It is estimated that William, son of Michael and Jane, was a teenager at the time of these domestic troubles. A man named James Woodward, possibly his maternal grandfather, became William's benefactor. In 1648, when William was about 21, he was "a legatee and the executor of the Nuncupative will of James Woodward." It is estimated that William was married about that time. Michael sold his house to William Latham in New Haven, Connecticut in 1645, and bought land 2 Jun 1679 in Yonkers. He sold land 15 Mar 1676 in Flushing and on 25 Jun became overseer of Fordham Manor. On 3 Aug 1681 he notified a change of residence from North Riding to Eastchester, New York.
Child of MICHAEL CHATTERTON and JANE WOODWARD is:
2. i. WILLIAM2 CHATTERTON, b. Abt. 1627, England; d. 1679.
Generation No. 2
2. WILLIAM2 CHATTERTON (MICHAEL1) was born Abt. 1627 in England, and died 1679. He married <UNNAMED> Abt. 1648. She was born Abt. 1630.
Notes for WILLIAM CHATTERTON:
William came to Strawberry Bank, New Hampshire about 1630 with his parents. Records show William sold land in Flushing, New York 15 Mar 1671. According to his will, he left everything to his son Michael.
Children of WILLIAM CHATTERTON and <UNNAMED> are:
i. WILLIAM3 CHATTERTON, JR, b. Abt. 1650.
Notes for WILLIAM CHATTERTON, JR:
On 15 Mar 1692 William was granted land from King William and Queen Mary. On 25 Jun 1692 he sold land in New York and was listed as a Constable/Supervisor.
3. ii. MICHAEL CHATTERTON, b. 1658, Flushing, Long Island, New York.
Generation No. 3
3. MICHAEL3 CHATTERTON (WILLIAM2, MICHAEL1) was born 1658 in Flushing, Long Island, New York. He married <UNNAMED> 1679. She was born Abt. 1660.
Notes for MICHAEL CHATTERTON:
Michael's family moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire a couple of years after his birth. Eastchester, Westchester Co., New York lists Michael Chadderton age 52 and Thomas age 28 living here in 1710.
Children of MICHAEL CHATTERTON and <UNNAMED> are:
4. i. CORNELIUS4 CHATTERTON, b. Abt. 1680, Yonkers, Westchester Co., New York; d. Abt. 1745.
ii. THOMAS CHATTERTON, b. 1682, Eastchester, Westchester Co., New York.
Notes for THOMAS CHATTERTON:
Thomas was living in Bedford, New York according to the 1710 census.
iii. RUTH CHATTERTON, b. Abt. 1684.
iv. JOAN CHATTERTON, b. 10 Nov 1686, Eastchester, Westchester Co., New York; d. 1 Sep 1687, Eastchester, Westchester Co., New York.

Mark, Ray and Steve:
I have made period ventures (figuratively speaking) into England looking for
a link to Michael's lineage. My focus has been in Lancashire. There are
two specific Chadderton lines there, one of Little Nuthurst Hall and the
other from Lees. Both lines are well-to-do farmers. I received the
following from another Chatterton researcher in England.
>>>>>Turning to the Chaddertons of Little Nuthurst Hall, William had a
brother
George and a sister Elizabeth. George married Jane from Poynton (about 15
miles away) and had two sons Edmund and Emlyn and a daughter Dorothy. We
don't know anything about Emlyn and Dorothy, but we do know that Edmund
married and had three children. And this is where it may get interesting.
Edmund's children were Thomas baptised 26 December 1575, Alexander baptised
15 December 1577 and Ann baptised 14 August 1582.
Why might this be interesting? Well, you will gathered that I have lots of
data but I haven't had time to put it all together yet. But, when you asked
about Michael, I looked though a mass of paper and I found this from
ancestory.com
'Thomas Chadderton (birth date unknown) arrived at Strawberry Bank, New
Hampshire on the ship Adams Ann from Portsmouth, England. The ship and
possibly passengers had ties with Bristol, England. Thomas was in Piscataqua
and Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1631. Thomas Chadderton had the following
child: Michael born 1600.'
I don't want to jump to conclusions because the birth date is not quite
right
(1600 vs 1607), this Thomas might not be Edmund's son baptised 1575, though
the dates are about right and there is no record of his death in the UK, and
none of this has any supporting evidence.
But it looks promising.
Hugh
PS. Alexander, baptised 15 December 1577, died in the UK. I have a copy of
his will.<<<<<<<<<
Hugh went on to say that there is no record of Thomas' death in the UK. The
reference to 1600 vs. 1607 is from his record of Michael's birth in 1607.
vs. the entry in Ancestry.
The quote from Ancestry.com seems to be someones leap of faith as to Thomas
being the father of Michael. Because of the Thomas and Michael connection
(we all know there was a Thomas Chatterton in New Hampshire with Michael,
connection between these two has not been proven) I feel this is a good
possibility for our Michael.
Any comments or ideas gratefully accepted,
Corinne Chadderdon

Ray, Steve,
I don't recall links to a Michael Chatterton in New Hampshire and Long
Island. I will try and check the information I have. I also
would suggest Mary Chadderdon Orwig of Williamsport, Pa as having the
most accurate data.

Ray,
Thank you for writing, this came to a mail box that I haven't checked for
a while. I check the Chattertons@hotmail box more often.
I have also met Mary Chadderdon Orwig of Pa ( the Mary from Pa you
refer to ?) My particular line of Chatterton I/we believe we
have recorded here in the states back to 1640 in New Haven, Connecticut,
with a passenger on the "Adams Ann" from England, Michael Chatterton.
I/we have not been able to figure out how to go about finding where
in England he came from, his family and ancestry, etc. Most information I
have seen is relatively current Chattertons in England,
usually late 1800s or early 1900s. I and my brother Gale are 11th
generation Chattertons, and my son Steven Michael is 12th gen.
Thanks for your information, I must devote some time to working on
this, as I have not for a while.
yours,
