I also descend from Stephen & Clarysia (Higginbotham) Chatham to Elijah and Susannah (Rodgers) Chatham. However, I think there's an error that gets repeated in every family tree and GEDCOM on this family line.
Stephen Chatham might well be the son of Epps Chatham/Cheatham, but he can't possibly be the son of Sarah Chaffin.
Epps didn't marry Sarah Chaffin until 1783, and Stephen (as well as Josiah) were born sometime before then. I see estimates ranging from 1770 (way too early) to 1781.
If you look at the census for Charlotte, VA in 1782, Epps is listed with a large household already (http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/charlotte/census/1782/1782tax.txt) . Again, he didn't marry Sarah until the following year.
So does anyone know the identity of Epps' first wife? And if he wasn't married previously, who were all those people in his household in 1782, and where did Stephen and Josiah come from?
