My wife and I loved Colorado but regret that we never did get to
return.
I was in a Medical Supply Co. and spent amonth in Denver training at
the
Fitzsimmons Gen. Hospital.
I wish you luck wiyth Butch. I have never been able to secure any info
from him concerning Benjamin, his grgrandfather, and Isaac's oldest
child. I why, nless he has no knowledge about him. I lost track of
Butch for a year or so. He changed his email address, but suddenly he
popped up again with this new address, saying that he had not heard
from me in a long. He still has never sent me anything about Benjamin.
He did not know about Isaac, but learned about him from a letter I had
sent in to the Chatham Family Genealogy
Forum a year or two ago. If you get any information from him please let
me know.
Thanks. Doyle
I JUST MOVED OUT TO CO 14 MONTHS AGO AND ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT HERE. THE FACT
THAT A DAUGHTER AND HER FAMILY ARE HERE HELPS.
i CAME HERE FROM WASH DC WHERE SHE WAS IN MED SCHOOL WITH 2 BABIES. I MOVED
THERE FROM RAVENNA OHIO WHERE I HAD JUST RECEIVED MY DEGREE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD
TO HELP OUT THEN STAYED FOR SEVERAL YEARS AFTER THEY WENT TO NEW YORK AND
THEN OUT HERE.
I MISS DC (ESPECIALLY THE NATIONAL ARCHICES AND DAR LIBRARY) A WHOLE LOT ,
BUT WILL ADJUST. THE LACK OF HUMIDITY HELPS A LOT!
TAKE CARE AND THANKS FOR THE INFO.--DO YOU HAVE AN E-MAIL ADDRES FOR RAY
"BUTCH" CHATHAM ?
ANN
I just noticed that you live in Colorado.
I wasstationed at Camp Carson, Col. during WW2, and went to Europe from
there with the33rd Medical Depot Co, and the 3rd Army in England,
France, Luxomberg and Germany. my wife wi
was wth me and worked at Peterson Field. We lovedColorado, and always
wanted to visit back, but were never able to do so. DC
I appreciate your writing. I hope you will forgive the typo errors that
will most likely go undetected by me. I am not using a computer, but
WebTV,with a wireless keyboard I am holding on my lap and using my
television sreen. I make a lot of errors by hitting the wrong keys or
by not pressing hard enough to make proper contact.
As I said before, I have not been able to definitely trace my
grgrandfather, IsaacChathamany farther back than the Wilson County
Tennessee l950 Census.
The family legend is that he married a full blooded Cherokee Indian gil,
and his father disinherited him. He was bortn in NC, about l80l, and
had a brothe, whose name I do not know, but to whom their father gave
the family inheritance becase his marriage. There is a record of an
Isaac Chatham in Orange County , Illinois, but I do not know if it is
him. There is a record of his marriage to a Nancy Johnson, daughter of
Pleasant Johnson, who was a neighbor and had been a neighbo in Orange
County, NC.
I do not know what happened to the first and Indian wife, but she was
evidently the father of his children. Isaac was a shoemaker, and
sometime later he moved to Nashville, TN and lived with my grtandfather,
William Chatham William was a boilermaker, and worked for a Burrell
Wood. William married a Mary Wood,, who wsmost likely the daughter of
Burrell Wood, Wiliam ws married 4 or 5 times, each time after being
widowed.
He also married a Sarah Wood, after the death of Mary, nd evidently
inherited the boilert business, as his name appeared as an owner in the
Nashville City Directory. I do not know when Isaac died, or where he is
buried. My grandfather, william died in 1911 before I was born in 1913.
We do not know what happened to the first and Indian wife. Pesumably
she died.
there is no record of the second wife, Nancy having been in Nashville
with him, so she must have died. But the Indian wife must have been the
mother of his children. Second wife Nancy was listed in the 1850 census
as being17 yeares old, the same age as Isaac's oldest son, Benjamin. As
I said I have no reord of Isaac, to know that it is him earlier than
1849, when his marriage to Nancy Johnson appears in a book of Wilson
County marriages There is no record in censuses or in city directories
of Nancy in Nashville, so she may have died in Wilson County ( Lebanon
is the county seat) It is about 25 or 30 miles SE or Nashvile.
I have been in toudh with a Ray Chatham in Hampton, VA, who says that he
if a geat grandson of Benjamin, Isaac's oldest son. I have located a
cousin in Ohio, who has followed through on the Indian thing, and who is
a chief of an Indian group and a membger of theirsenate. I have been in
touch with another cousin, the geat gandaughter of another of my dad's
sisters, who lives in Arizona, and who is also aware of the Indian blood
in the family. It makes me1/8th Indian.
I have been in touch with a Joe Cheathm in Indianapolis, who has done a
lot of work on the Chatham/Cheatham line, and has given me some valuable
information.
He says that a lotf Chathams were originally Cheathams. I have been
told that originally, Chathams were people from the town of Chatham in
England, and derived their name from the town. If you will put your
computor on Search and type in "Chatham Family Genealogy Forum" you will
find dom - a lot - of correspondence about the Chathams - several
branches, and that might put you in touch with somone who coud give you
information about your line.
that is how I came in contact with Ray "Butch" Chatham in Hampton,VA.
Joe cheatham in Idianapols, has researced the Cheatham/Chatham line, and
mgh have some info helpful to you.
His email address is JoeCheatham(a)aol.com
I am confident that there is most likely some connections somewhere way
back in NC if we knew where to look for them.
I have more information about my Isaac after he moved to Nashville,
which may or may not - most likely not - which would be helpful to you.
But I will be glad to be of help if I can. Best wishes for success in
your search.
By the way, I was born in Louisville,KY. My parents were both natives
of Nashville, and moved back when I was 10. I grew up there and went
through High School there. My high school class of 1930 had a reunion
last Saturday, celeb]rating the 75th anniversar of our gaduation. Wehad
7 class members, all over 90, and one teacher in her late 90s present.
I am a retired Southern Baptist Minister of Education and Music. My
daughtert is a
n Episcopal minister and is
associate Rector of Trinity Episcopal
Church here. My wife of 62 years died in April of 2003, and I moved
here to be with my daughter. We have bought a home and are movinginto
it on June 27. I am in good health, drive my car, and have been living
alone in anapartment.
I don't know that I can be of any more help to you in your search - I
have hit a wall in mine - but I shuld be happy to help in any way I can,
Best os success in your
quest for information about your forebearers.

I am Edward Doyle Chatham. I am sorry, but I do not know anything about
the Chathams you are seeking information about
My great grandfgather Isaac Chatham, was born in NC, maybe in Caswell
County about 1801, and is listed in the Wilson County Tennessee 1800
census, along wth a second wife, Susan Johnsn Chatham, married in 1849.
She was the daughter of a neighbor, Pleasant Johnson, who had als been a
neighbor in NC. I know that he had the following children in the 1850
Wilson County census:
Benjamin 18, Mary 17, William 16 (my grandfather),Nancy 9, and James 7,
presumably the childten of the first and Indian wife. Isaac moved to
Nashville later nd lived with William. Isaac as a shoemaker, and Willam
a boilermaker.
James enlisted in a Tennessee company in the Civil War, and was klled at
the battle of Chicamauga. I do not know when Isaac died or whre he was
buried.
There were someIsaac Chathams listed in a couple of erlier NC censuses,
ut I do not know if they were my Isaac. I have not been able to trace
him officially any farther back than the 1850 Wioson County Tennessee
Census.
Sorry I cannot be of any help to you concerning the ones you named.
I am 92 years of age and live in Clarksville, TN
