It seems to me that Arthur and Levi Chatfield were both seamen who travelled from England to South Australia and then back to England before deciding to emigrate to South Australia.
This is the information I have on the arrival of the CHATFIELDS in SA:
CHATFIELD, Arthur William 23, Crew on RAPID, seaman He applied for free passage to SA [Applic.0312,Embark.124 Adult=1M; Address on Applic. Chichester] arriving Adelaide [Kingscote, KI] RAPID from London August 22, 1836.
Clearly he returned to England [vessel currently not known], as he is then recorded as arriving Adelaide via Kingscote KI October 12 1838 onboard the PESTONJEE BOMANJEE from London.
CHATFIELD, Alfred William married Harriett Holbrook onboard the PESTONJEE BOMANJEE in 1838.
The South Australian REGISTER reported that LEVI CHATFIELD died tragically on July 9th, 1853.
This report mentions that he was chief officer of the PESTONJEE BOMANJEE, which arrived Holdfast Bay & Adelaide on October 12th, 1838.
CHATFIELD, Levi 25 farm labourer, and wife 24 and 2 children applied for free passage to SA [Applic.4324, Embark.2560 1 male adult 1 female adult 2 child/ren son: 4, dau: 6m; Address on Applic. Framfield, Sussex] SOMERSETSHIRE arriving SA on 24/8/1839.
my interest in this subject: arrival of passengers to South Australia between 1836 and 1853.

Alfred William Chatfield arrived in Adelaide August 1838 and he left after bankruptcy and gaol in 1841 for Victoria. Levi Chatfield arrived there in 1839.
Adelaide was laid out by Col Light in 1836 and 1837!
I have 267 relations up and down for Levi Chatfield and Harriet Tickner. Sadly he died in 1853 a few months before his 12 child was born, she was named after her mother, Harriet Jane. Levi's wife maried again in 1860 and died in Adelaide in 1875.
Any help please let me know as there seem to be a lot of variations on what is correct. e.g. Harriet was born in Mayfield, Sussex and not Kent.
