Hello Nigel,
Since the posting in 2003, I have found my Faulkner/Chatfield connection.
In 1799, my ggggg grandmother, Philly Chatfield (nee Lock), widow of William Chatfield, wheelwright in Yapton, married Thomas Faulkner. Philly's family were from Yapton. In documents relating to deeds on some cottages in Yapton, Thomas Faulkner is described as a "higgler, of Slindon" - although I don't yet know where he was born.
A few months before they were married, Philly and Thomas had a son - Reuben (my 4xg grandfather). He has been variously recorded as "Reuben Chatfield AKA Faulkner", "Reuben Chatfield" and "Reuben Faulkner". They had two further children, Francis Faulkner and Alfred Faulkner. They lived in Slindon and Binsted.
Thomas had a brother, John Faulkner. He was a tailor in Littlehampton and was married to Sarah, nee Weller from Arundel. Records uncovered indicate, so far, that they were childless.
I don't know if there is a connection with the Fletching Faulkners - Yapton, Binsted and Slindon are a fair way from Fletching. Chatfield is a very common name in Sussex. As I mentioned above, I don't know where Thomas (or John) were born and if I discover a Fletching (or any other connection with your Faulkners and Chatfields) I'll let you know.
Thank you for taking the trouble to reply to my post. Good luck with your research.
Deborah

There is a vague Chatfield - Faulkner connection in my tree. An Elizabeth Faulkner (born 1724, Fletching, Sussex) married Henry Holmes circa 1762 - their daughter Hannah Holmes married William Chatfield (born 1757) in 1785 in Fletching, Sussex.
This is not a direct Chatfield - Faulkner connection as you can see but I thought I'd offer it anyway!
