Thank you, June. No, I have not asked John Bell Chatfield for help,
yet. I will have to follow up on this and see if he might know anything
about this line.
I was able to find some information, namely, there was a Charles Alfred
Chatfield living in LaCrosse in the mid to late 1800's who would have
been either a brother, brother-in-law, cousin or ex-husband of
Caroline's due to their ages and proximity. Of course it's possible
there was no relation at all. However, I also found that there is a
S.T. Chatfield buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in LaCrosse and buried
sometime before 1880, who served in a war as his headstone reads "I Wis.
L.A." There is no birthdate mentioned or death date. I am guessing
that he served in the Civil War and died during the war. If so, then it
would explain why Caroline was a widow at a young age. However I'm
confused because she allegedly married John DeColon in April 1858,
before the war began. So once again, I don't know if she was a
Chatfield by birth or by marriage There are so few written records of
that time period, it's so hard to find out for sure what actually is the
truth.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will try to make a point of sending a
request to John Bell Chatfield.
Thank you,
Stephanie

Hello all,
My name is Stephanie McCann and I live in Illinois. My sister and I have
been researching our family tree for a little over 4 years. Of course I
subscribed to your list because we have a family member named Chatfield
whom we have been unable to get much information on and I was hoping
that perhaps someone out there might be able to help me. Here's what we
know:
My Gr-Gr-Gr Grandmother's name was Caroline Su Chatfield and she was
born December 10, 1829 and married John DeColon on April 1, 1858.
Now we always assumed that Chatfield was her maiden name, however a
recent receipt of John DeColon's obituary indicates that he married Mrs.
Carolina Chatfield which could mean that she was a widow, in which case
who was she married to? Our question is: Is Chatfield her married name
or maiden name?
The other mystery is in regards to her daughter, Norma. Norma is my
Gr-Gr Grandmother and we were told that her name was Norma DeColon,
however while John DeColon's obituary states that he has 5 grown
children, Norma is never mentioned although the other children are.
Which makes me wonder if Norma was really a Chatfield, the daughter of
Caroline's first husband. Again, we can find no further information on
these 2 ladies.
I know it's a long shot, but perhaps somebody out there recognizes their
names from their research and could help us with ours.
Caroline Chatfield DeColon passed away in January 1931 in LaCrosse,
Wisconsin and Norma (Chatfield?) DeColon was born December 16, 1861,
married Rueben M. Ward sometime around 1878. She was alleged to have
been a mail order bride, however I'm not so sure seeing as how her
mother and father (or was it step-father?) were living in Wisconsin not
far from where Norma's husband came from. Norma and Rueben had a son
named John Madison Ward b. 12-25-1878 in San Jose, CA .
I hope that this is enough information to go on. I would really like to
find out if Caroline Su was a Chatfield by birth or by marriage and if
her daughter, Norma was a Chatfield via her father.
Thank you so much,
Stephanie McCann graytm8(a)earthlink.net
