Hello all
I have been researching my family tree for some time and one of the oddities
I have been unable to answer is why did my gt.grandfather, between 1875 and
1880 adopt the name CHATFIELD, and also give the name to two of his seven
sons.
There is no record of anyone leaving him property or otherwise in a will, so
where did the name come from?
The brief details are these
My gt.grandfather was Charles CHATFIELD HOWITT b. London circa 1846,
occupation shipwright, died 1906 Gloucester. UK.
His sons with CHATFIELD as a name were
Frank CHATFIELD HOWITT b.1880. Gloucester. died 1943. Canada.
Felix CHATFIELD HOWITT b. 1885. Gloucester. died 1919. Canada.
Felix did not appear to use this name in adult life while Frank did and
passed it on to his descendants.
If anyone can offer suggestions I would be delighted.
Thankyou

Hi all
Does anyone have knowledge of the following CHATFIELD family
My grandfather was George Frederick CHATFIELD born on June 15, 1882 to William (a bricklayer) and Rachel Louisa (formerly GLAYZER) CHATFIELD of 49 Stewart's Road, Battersea, Surrey in 1882. Rachel does not appear on the 1881 Census under the name GLAYZER. On George Frederick's marriage certificate his father is William Henry CHATFIELD at Bricklayer living in Wickham Market, Suffolk.
On the 1881 Census there is a William H. born about 1858 in Brighton, Sussex and was living at 79 Sterndale Road, Battersea, Surrey with his parents George & Hannah CHATFIELD. George was born about 1827 and Hannah about
1853 (which is either an error or this is George's second wife). There were 4 other children at that address in 1881
Edward A. born about 1863 in Brighton, Sussex
Albert A. born about 1865 in Brighton, Sussex
Elizabeth J. born about 1868 in Sussex
Frederick J. born about 1880 in Battersea, Surrey.
I am new to searching the Sussex and Surrey areas, could someone please tell me what is available, and where from, in the way of parish records and census details for the Brighton, Sussex and the Battersea, Surrey areas. I know about the census information available from the PRO on micro fiche and microfilm but I was wondering if there is anything available that is already transcribed.
Many thanks for any help you can give me
