on Friday, 23 February, RootsWeb will begin a
planned temporary downtime for maintenance of its servers
and hosting process. It will limit this downtime as much as

I have the same details for the Samuel and Mary Mercer marriage
My Thomas's baptism date - Slinfold, to Samuel and Mary, 30th December 1798
This fits in quite nicely as a first-born, given the marriage in Feb 1798
I also found - not on your list - Emily and Harriot, both bapt 6th March
1808, but this time in Westbourne, near Chichester, to a Samuel and Mary
I can find very few Chatfields in Slinfold or Horsham either before or after
the period 1798 - 1807.
The interesting additional detail is that I have found a Samuel C born in
Westbourne in 1764 to a John Chatfield and Mary Bridger (m. 16th May 1756)
My romantic theory, and I'm saving the prooving for my retirement! is that
Samuel left Westbourne in the late 1790's as a result of the widespread
panic on the south coast of Napoleonic invasion, and only returned post 1807
when it was all over.
Sporadic research back beyond this reveals the following which "fit"
datewise and geographywise, but are really pure supposition.
1738 John Chatfield born to Samuell (sic) and Catherine South Hayling,
Sussex
1729 Samuell Chatfield married Catherine Harfield South Hayling (age 30)
1699 Samuel born to Samuel and Elizabeth South Hayling
1691 Samuel Chatfield married Elizabeth Vengham South Hayling (age 22)
1669 Samuel Chatfield born to Edward and Elizabeth Upmarden, sussex
1667 Edward Chatfield married Elizabeth Rumbriger Compton, Sussex
1626 Edward Chatfield born (probably too early)
There's not much more to add - the above has taken 15 years!. But I will try
to get into Horsham record office to check out the connection in more detail
some time this spring - but don't hold your breath!
Who do you know in Worthing? I've played rugby for Worthing RFC for 15 years
and know a lot of people there - its a small world you know
Best wishes Gavin

Hi Gavin,
As you say the plot thickens. With regard to Kitty my researcher back in
1999 found a marriage between Samuel Chatfield & Mary Mercer at Slinfold
Parish Church on February 18th 1798 Later baptism records at Horsham showed
:- Mary 10/101800, John 28/01/1803, Kitty 0667/12/1804 & Richard
03/11/1806.
I found my John Chatfield* originally on the 1841 census for Broadgreen
Croydon stating he was born at Horsham living with his wife Sophia also from
Horsham. But the 1851 census stated she was born in Lingfield.
They were married at the old St.John's Parish Church, Croydon on 14/10/1827.
John* died in 1854 in Croydon, Sophia died in 1890 at Uckfield.
His brother Richard marr. Tabitha Vertue at St.Mary's Newington London Feb 3
1823.
Tabitha had a child Rebecca in May 1824 mother and child both died in
September of same year. Richard died in Croydon January 10th 1835 have
found no record of a second marriage.
John Chatfield* and his wife had Sophia 1827, John 1829,Richard #1833,
Nancy 1834, Sally 1835 Julia 1836, Harriot 1837 & Caroline 1838. My line
in the next generation goes through Richard# and his wife Nancy Ann Peat
daughter of John Peat & Patience Roffey. They had 3 daughters & 2 sons. One
of their daughters Lavinia Nancy married Alexander James Mullally my
grandfather. As a matter of interest the John Chatfield born 1829 had a
son called Richard Samuel. My father lost 3 of his 4 bros. in W W 1 The
surviving eldest brother Philip, returned to England and married a girl
called Edie, who's mother's maiden name was Chatfield. All this according
to there only surving child (my cousin). Who I visited recently in
Vancouver the lady is in her 80's and blind but I'm still trying to check
this one out it's a bit difficult since I don't even know Uncle Philip's
wife's name. Are you still following this ?
I have also found a number of other Chatfield's living and dying in the
Croydon area in the 1800's. I can furnish more info these folks if you are
interested. Finally I would love to receive photos of Slinfold and
Lingfield my wife and I both love Sussex we have very old friends who live
in Worthing. By the way my wife Maureen & I were born in Croydon and
although we have both lived in Canada for may years we still miss good old
Sussex by the Sea.
All the best
Brian Mullally

The plot thickens.........
My line, all well proven
Gavin Chatfield B 1960 Brighton, Sussex
Raymond Chatfield B 1933 Brighton
David William Chatfield B 1910 Brighton
John Hunter Chatfield B 1868 Brighton
Mary Chatfield B 1834 Southwick, Sussex
Thomas Chatfield B 1799 Horsham, Sussex
Like you, I had identified Samuel and Mary Mercer as the prime candidates
for Thomas's parents, but have yet to prove. I'll get you some photo's of
Slinfold, Lingfield, if of interest - only 30 mins from here.
I also had your John, and Richard, but not Kitty
Somewhere I have some notes of likely individuals for the three generations
before Samuel, but can't find them at the moment. Obviously not proven
anyway.
I note that Thomas does not appear in your list of siblings.
However, there is one other coincidence - Thomas appeared in the 1830's in
Southwick - the village where I now live - in the 1830's. At the same time,
a Richard Chatfield appeared nearby, and the age would fit with Richard and
Thomas being the two Horsham brothers. I have it on my list to track down
Richard's line, but not got around to it yet.
Do you have any trace of Richard?
I have huge amount of info on Thomas, his daughter Mary, and his
illegitimate grandson - my ggrandfather, John Hunter Chatfield, but have not
found time to follow up.
By way of a bit more background on my line, which may be of interest if we
can tie up the Samuel connection - placenames all Sussex - you'll find them
on the map!! - dates approx. I'll look them up another time if of interest
to you.
Thomas was in Southwick from about 1830 - 1850. Listed in census as baker
and wheelwright
All cencus's, and death certificate give place of birth as Horsham
Married Ruth Patching b Lower Beeding.
Three Children, Mary, Ruth, Thomas
Thomas died in Brighton Workhouse approx 1960
Mary married Owen Wadey in Southwick, had a daughter who died (I think) was
then widowed, and had my ggrandfather a year after being widowed when she
was 34. He was John Hunter Chatfield. Fathers name blank on the b
certificate.
Then married again, but her son kept her maiden name.
John Hunter C was a career soldier - India and Boer War, Great War - with
19th Hussars.
Had 5 children, the youngest of which was....
My grandfather, born Brighton 1910, carpenter builder by trade, Royal
Engineer in 2nd War. Had three boys, oldest of which was............
My father Raymond, Chartered Surveyor - now retired - lives Ditchling
Me, Construction Project Manager
I have three boys - school age
As it happens, my oldest son was born in Croydon - we lived there for two
years - but I think my line needs to by by the sea!!! - we moved back to
Sussex shortly after Tom was born
One of my grandfathers brothers went to Australia in the 30's and stayed
there, but apart from that I seem to come from a fairly sedentary line.
I guess thats enough stuff for now.

Within moments of responding that I couldn't help, something made me check
among the papers that I have had in my pile of stuff to file from last year.
I received a letter from an Ann Chatfield out of the blue last autumn - no
relative - Ann was enquiring about Chatfield coat of arms, and had got my
name from a mutual contact in Australia.
Anyway, Ann's address is 112 Priory Road, Langney, Eastbourne, E Sussex,
BN23 7BL
Given that your last address mentioned is Langney, might be worth checking
with Ann
Please let me know if you have any success
