Dear Denise
Many thanks. Yes I'd very much like to keep in touch but agree I'd rather not include my email on this site. There is so much more we can share on the Chater family. Skype is safer as unwanted contacts can be blocked. Are you on Skype? My Skype name is.. awelly2 . Look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes
Anne

Many thanks for your email. I think there is some confusion re Robert Chater as from my research Isabella married William Chater and they married on 21 July 1811.(perhaps I am wrong!) Also, I have never come across Robert Chater as a 3rd child of Charles and Margaret and think this is incorrect. Their first child John William born 1840, died before 1843. Their second child was also named John - a common thing to do in those days! I think your grandmother's suggestion that he was born in Dec 1842 is correct. He certainly had an interesting life in the workhouse as a child. Perhaps you already know about that!
Anne, I am shortly cancelling my membership to Ancestry and with that in mind wonder how we can keep in touch. Do you have any suggestions? I am reluctant to add my email address as I am not sure of how secure this website is. What do you think?
Best wishes, Denise

Hello Denise
Thank you so much for your prompt reply & all the information re the Chaters. I am wondering if you know anything about your Grandfather Robert Wilfrid's parents John Chater & Sarah Harvey or John Chater's parents - Charles John Chater b 1815app and Margaret Leary b 1820 Cork, Ireland. Family tradition says Charles travelled frequently to France and spoke several languages but I can find very little information about him.
I know that Charles & Margaret had 3 children - John Chater (see below), Robert Chater (I cannot find out anything about Robert. He isn't on any UK census or birth/marriage/ death records. Family tradition says he went abroad and married) & Isabella Chater b1856app (Isabella married Edward Maguire and had 5 sons).
John Chater was born in Soho London. Not sure of date. My grandmother thought it was 17 Dec 1942 but on the census records he appears to be 6 months old in 1841 (died 19 Mar 1906 in Portsmouth). He married on the 17th May 1871 at Brompton Oratory RC Church, Kensington, Sarah M Harvey (b 1850 Bridport, Dorset, died 1930 Portsmouth). He worked there as a porter. They had 5 children:
1. Agnes Gertrude Chater b 28 May 1872 Chelsea, died 21 Jan 1951 at Goring Hospital, Sussex, married William Chambers 24 Sept 1893 at Brompton Oratory... Had 7 children 6 girls & 1 boy
2. Edith Mary Chater b 1876 Chelsea, died 1956 in Lincoln. married Charles James Burfitt 23 Apr 1902. Had 5 children 4 girls & 1 boy
3. Robert Wilfrid Chater b Jan-Mar 1878 Chelsea, died 1946 in Havant....
4. Mary Alice Chater b 1881 Chelsea, died after 1901 possibly in Portsmouth
5. Hilda Mary Chater b 1890 Chelsea. married Herbert Fynn in 1911. He was killed in Jutland in 1916. Then married Frederick G Payne in 1919 Havant. They had one daughter.
Would love to know more about Charles& Margaret and their 3 children if you have any details, I'd be grateful. Best wishes.Anne

Hello Anne,
Pleased to meet you too. Yes, my grandfather Robert Wilfrid Chater and your great grandmother Agnes Gertrude Chambers (nee Chater) were brother/sister. Robert married my grandmother, Margaret Ann (nee Flanagan) at the Cathedral of The Good Shepherd, Singapore on 19 Nov 1904. She was born in Hong Kong 23 Feb 1882. Together they had 4 children. Mary Margaret Ann Chater born 8 Jan 1907, (died Hampshire 16 Dec 1973), Wilfrid John Chater (my father) born 6 Jan 1908 (died Shrewsbury,15 Dec 1973 (died the day before Margaret, as she was called!). George was born 31 March 1909, died in Siam (now Thailand) of Meningitis aged 29 on 17 March 1939. The youngest was Robert Ernest Chater born 2 March 1911 and died Midhurst, King Edward V11 hospital on 27 August 1968. All 4 children were born in the Singapore Straits Settlements (now Singapore). My grandfather worked as a printer at Kelly & Walsh in Singapore from 1904-1921 and moved to take up the position of Government Printer i!
n Kuching, Sarawak in 1921. Together with my father they escaped from the Japanese who landed in Kuching on Dec 24, 1941. They both returned to take up their positions again in April 1946. Sadly in July my grandfather flew home to Hampshire and died of cancer of the oesophagus on 11 Dec 1946. Margaret married Frank Berry in India on 15 Nov 1928. Their son Ian Robert was born there 29 Nov 1933. Ian died in Hampshire 15 June1996. He and I were the only grandchildren. Robert Ernest married Lillian Margaret (Lee) on 9 Dec 1950 in Miri, Sarawak. She died 15 Sept 1990. Do hope the above answers some of your questions.

Dear Denise
Delighted to have found you. We share the same Chater ancestors and I already had you on my tree as John Wilfrid's daughter & living in Australia. My great grandmother Agnes Gertrude Chater b 28 May 1872 was a sister to your grandfather Robert Wilfrid Chater. I knew that she had a brother called Robert W Chater b 1878 in Chelsea and that he had 4 children and lived for many years in Singapore & that their children were born either there or in Sarawak, Borneo. I believe two of Mary Margaret's brothers died in Borneo. Would be very happy to share information with you.
Anne

Dear Jane
Have just sent you a message and I see you have other information . Must be the same family... My Margaret Chater and Frank Berry had a son called Ian. I believe they returned to England and had a café possibly in Kent before moving to Bedhampton where they lived in a house at the bottom of her Aunt Hilda's garden. Ian was living on Hayling Island with his family and possibly still does?? Would love to hear from you.
Best wishes
Anne

Hi Jane I think I am a descendant of the same family. I have a Margaret Chater married to a Frank Berry on my Tree. It is highly likely that she was born in Singapore as her family spent some time in Singapore and yes she had a brother Bob. I have done quite a lot of research on this part of my family and would be happy to share information with you.
