It's a great mystery. My mother has, in her possession, a few handwritten pages that were copied from a diary (presumably from our line, Most likely a son or nephew of James Daniel Chater.)
This person was in Colorado in August and September of 1881 on behalf of the Canadian Grand Trunk railroad and was probably an engineer of geologist. He had a wild and wooly time!. He also seems to have had VIP access to the mines in the area, as he was allowed to pick up specimens! He was from Toronto, had a brother John; and his mother was still alive in 1881. I'm working from a typewritten copy of the handwritten copy of the original. The handwritten copy was given to my Grandma by her Mother Edith Chater nee Hamlyn but she din't apparently tell them where she got it! Does this ring a bell; strike a chord with anyone? We are very eager to find out who this is.
