Hello elizabethcoker31
I only have Mary Margaret Ann CHATER's father. His name was Robert Wilfred CHATER. I don't have any other information.
Do you know much about Robert Wilfred CHATER?
Regards
Liz

Hi again, I know a couple of the Chater's in Kenya. Family now living in the UK. Re the Cape Chater's and the South African side generally, I spent a couple of hours this afternoon picking out the Chater's in South Africa from the LDS site. There's a lot more details these days than when I looked a few years ago, so maybe you'll pick up something new. Definitely worth working through I'd say.
Good luck
Liz

Good day Liz,
Many thanks for that; you weren't joking about the South African link. There is an awful lot there. I do remember my father, who was born in Kenya, referring to second cousins in the Cape so it makes sense.
I have communicated with Sue but her arm goes off in a different direction and the root may be much further back.
Many thanks for your tips.
Giles Chater,Vancouver

Dear Giles
Many thanks for your note. you are correct, I am not related to Daniel Sutcliffe CHATER nor James CHATER of the South African link. I confess I have not done much further research on this line. There is quite a lot of detail on the LDS site www.familysearch.org. Furthermore, Susan Potter has started a one name study of CHATER, and she may well be able to help you.

The South African National Archives may well pull up a few names for you http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300dl.
I do know there was quite a large family of CHATER's in South Africa, but I just have not been able to find the time to research them.
best wishes
Liz

Hi Liz,
I have followed your site keenly.
I have been waiting for completion of your 'not related to' area but in a 2003 reply you say that you have no direct link to Daniel Sutcliffe CHATER,b 1815 in Ceylon; have I got that right.
I'd also be interested in the South African extension from James Chater if you can point me in that direction.
many thanks.
Giles Addison Chater, Vancouveer
