Hi all,
Thanks to a couple of tips from Andy I have managed to get this far.
Has anyone any info or connection to my GG grandparents,Ralph Chater and Jane Austin. I have a copy of their marriage certificate, M 25 December 1875 at the Registry Office in the district of Lanchester in the County of Durham.
Ralph age 21,(I think he was really only 19)coal miner, residence Leadgate, father Samuel (deceased) also coal miner and Jane age 20, residence Leadgate father James also coal miner.
My grandfathers birth certificate says William Austin Chaytor b 14 April 1877 Bradley Brick Works Medomsley father Ralph Chaytor coal miner and mother Jane Austin, residence Bradley Brick Works Medomsley. (I can`t find any reference to the brickworks)
On the 1871 census I have a James Chaytor age 16 and Ralph Chaytor age 14, coal miners, both born Trimdon Grange boarding with a William Rodgerson and family in the village of Leadgate but I can`t make out the district, it looks like St N-----. Jane may have been born in Leadgate.
I am having a problem tracking down the family but I believe Ralph died and Jane remarried later, I have a reference to a Jane Chaytor marrying in 1895 in the area but no other clues.
My grandfather, Ralph and Jane`s son, William Austin Chaytor came to Australia and changed the spelling of his name to CHATER and married Barbara Meyers in Sydney Australia in 1905.
I would love to find any information on the family.
My email is dsramu(a)hotmail.com
Thanks
Dorothy nee Chater
