Hello Listers
It has been some time since anyone posted to this list, so I thought Id see
if I can kick start some dialogue!
Firstly, I have now added a message board link to this mailing list. That
means anyone posting a message on the CHATER message board at Rootsweb will
automatically have it forwarded to the CHATER mailing list.
Secondly, I have been beavering away at the British Library for some months
now, and I have added a substantial number of CHATERs to my website. These
are predominantly CHATERs with a history of sorts in India. They might
have worked there briefly, married, had children anything basically. The
other point I should make is that my CHATERs seem to have very strong links
with the Armenian community, particularly in Calcutta. My own father and
his father spent a number of years in Port Blair, which is part of the
Andaman and Nicobar Islands. However, I have come across CHATERs in India,
who were just passing thru and ended up in Australia, Canada, USA, and even
the Caribbean!
I have in excess of 250 CHATERs listed on my website. If you do find
anyone that is of interest to you do let me know, as I might even have
further information available that I havent posted on the site yet!
Perhaps to get things going on this list, could I ask each of you to post
your interest or any queries on CHATER. Have any of you searched for the
origins of the name? Is anyone else doing a one-name study, if so, perhaps
we should talk it might save a lot of time!
Recently I have had a number of enquiries from people who are beginning to
research the name which is very encouraging!
So come on, lets hear from you.
Best wishes
Liz
