I am afraid I know very little about my Chater ancestors. Mary Chater who I believe was born about 1737 in Hale, Hants was the mother of Anne Moody who was baptised on the 24th June, 1772 at Hale, Hants. Her daughter, Mary Ann Prince was baptised on the 11th May, 1802 at Downton and her daughter Elizabeth Eldridge was born on the 25th July, 1824 also at Downton. Elizabeth's daughter was Sarah (Florence) Godden who was born in 1865 in Portsea. Her daughter was Edith Chittenden born on the 23th April, 1892 in Portsmouth. Edith's youngest child was Jacqueline Elizabeth Morris who was born on the 21st April, 1933 in Portsmouth and I was born on the 9th April, 1949 in Winchester. The female line continues through my daughter, Samantha Joan Mitchell who was born in Greenwich on the 29th November, 1975 to her two daughters, Lucie Elizabeth and Courtney Alice Cole who were born on the 26th February, 1998 and 30 May, 1999 respectively.
We visited Hale earlier this year. What a delightful village. I am sure that our ancestors must have been estate workers of some kind.
I would be interested to hear from anyone who can also trace their Chater roots to the Hale area.
All the best
Sheila Mitchell
Hello one and all
I have been recently searching through the message boards at rootsweb for
anyone who has posted an interest in the name CHATER.
I have now started up the CHATER mailing list at rootsweb, this can be found
at
chater-l(a)rootsweb.com <mailto:chater-l@rootsweb.com> . One or two of you
I know already, but anyone who would like to subscribe to the mailing list
can do so by sending a message to chater-l-request(a)rootsweb.com
<mailto:chater-l-request@rootsweb.com> that contains the word SUBSCRIBE and
nothing else.
You might also be interested to know that there is also now a CHATER message
board also at rootsweb.com.
Just to fill you in my on connections with CHATER. I am a CHATER by birth,
born in Southampton, UK. My father Cyril Alexander CHATER was born in
Calcutta, India and my grandfather, Herbert Alfred Henry CHATER was born in
Port Blair, India. There are a large number of CHATERs in India, some of
Armenian origins. Others have spread throughout Asia. You may already be
aware of the popularity of the CHATER name in Hong Kong. There is a Chater
Street, Chater Park, Chater Towers to name but a few. Sir Paul CHATER was
a prominent businessman in Hong Kong.
Anyone interested in the CHATER name with the India interest might like to
subscribe to the India-l(a)rootsweb.com <mailto:India-l@rootsweb.com>
mailing list. The listers on this particular site are extremely
knowledgeable and very helpful even for the smallest of queries. To
subscribe to this list please send a message to India-l-request(a)rootsweb.com
<mailto:India-l-request@rootsweb.com> that contains the word subscribe and
nothing else.
Should you wish to share your family stories of CHATER, perhaps you could
post them to the CHATER mailing list (as above) and see what happens!
I look forward to hearing from you!
Best wishes for 2003
