I am looking for information on my g-g-grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Chasteen who married William "Nute" Newton Vance on 7/22/1888. Several dates exist for the both of them, as do versions of how many children they had. Their son John Vance was my g-grandfather. His obituary (and Sarah's) indicate there were two daughters that became deceased before Sarah. I am looking for any information about Sarah and her siblings (hoping to find a picture somewhere) as well as her children. There is a family tree posted to the community forum that has her exact information in it but the member has chosen not to receive inquiries. Perhaps I can reach you this way? Or someone knows about the tree. Thanks so much to anyone who could help me. I really appreciate it.

The parents of John Chasteen have been in dispute for quite some time. Some descendants claimed that he was the son of John Chasteen and grandson of James Chasteen. This does not appear to be the case. This John Chasteen is a son of Jesse Chasteen. The proof can be found in the Civil War Pension File of Nicholas B. Chasteen.
(October 4, 1882) John Chasteen...says his age is now 58 years old and a farmer by occupation and his Post Office address is Reedsville, KY, was [a] soldier in Company G, 4th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry and that Nicholas B. Chasteen was a soldier same Company and Regiment and the same service and at same time and they are brothers...
(December 12, 1890) John Chasteen...that his age is 67 years...that he was a private in Company G, 4th Regiment Kentucky Volunteers in the War for the Suppression of the Southern Rebellion, the same organization in which the claimant[Nicholas B. Chasteen] was a sergeant and have known him from his infancy, being his brother.
(February 16, 1894) John Chasteen. I am 71 years of age, occupation farmer, P.O. Berea, Madison County, Kentucky. I am a brother of claimant...Claimant lived with me from the time he was a small boy until he went into the service.
A family Bible is mentioned and was apparently lost. It appears that Nicholas B. Chasteen had a Family Bible that had specific dates in it. A couple of pages were removed and used in the pension file. But those are now lost, though mentioned throughout the paperwork. Here are three more statements that help solidify the lineage of John Chasteen.
(October 10, 1910)...Nicholas B. Chasteen was seventy-five years old the 13th day of October, 1910, that there is no public record of his birth and that there is no baptismal record and that the family record was lost when this affiant was ten or twelve years old while the family were moving from Rockcastle County to Garrard County, Kentucky. Affiant further states that his parents names were, father Jesse and his mother Levelia Chasteen. Affiant states that he resided with his mother, Levelia Chasteen, from 1850 to 1860 in Garrard County, Kentucky, Post Office, Paint Lick.
(December 8, 1910) J. L. Gay, notary public of Madison County, Kentucky, and Mayor of the City of Berea, Kentucky, do hereby certify that Nicholas B. Chasteen, Claimant...has this day produced and exhibited to me a Bible containing a record of his age in the following words and figures Viz:
N.B. Chasteen was born Oct 15th 1835.
He states in his affidavit and on oath that this record was transcribed from his mother's statements and in her presence about 35 years ago, which would be in the year 1875. This Bible seems to be old enough to contain this record as it bears date of publication 1871, and has all appearances of being a true record. As he has stated it also contains a record of the ages of claimants wife and children also date of deaths of his mother and others.
(December 5, 1910) Jesse Chasteen. My name is Jesse Chasteen. I am a brother to the claimant[Nicholas B. Chasteen]. I have been personally acquainted with said claimant, Nicholas B. Chasteen, all of his life. I can remember when he was born. He was born October 15, 1835. I am about 4 years older than he is. I know my age by record of my father and mother which they told me and I know claimant's age by my own and of my own personal knowledge. My father kept a record of our ages but it was lost before the Civil War. We then recorded our ages by our mother's recollections and our own. These records all show the same as above stated.
The 1850 Census of Garrard County, Kentucky, further corroborates the evidence. It lists Jesse and Leavea Chasteen with 5 children: Roda, Jesse Jr., Nicholas, Orson, and Margaret. Nicholas and Jesse Jr. are both in the household and their statements are given above. I hope this evidence will be sufficient for your endeavors.
Sincerely,
Dave Chasteen

Karen, I did not know that my grandpa was that musical, although, from some of the information that I have gathered, alot of the Shasteens were musically inclined. Francis Marion Shasteen, one of many by that name, was musically inclined and died in Andersonville Confederate Prison(loosely called prisoner of war camp). I will make it a point to get my info scanned and downloaded onto my computer so I can forward this on to you and others. I got ahold of Martha Rittinger...this evening...who is the great great grandaughter(I believe) of Martha Shasteen...one of the original Shasteen settlers and founders of Springbank Church and Cemetery. This is real interesting and quite rich in information of our ancestors. I'm not into geneology as much as the Mormons are as I am not Mormon, but this is really great. Something to leave our children and grandchildren and also others out there. Thanks so much for your response. Keep in touch...Jim Shasteen

The family tree would be good. This week is our annual down time at my office so have been working on Ancestry & loading more info and a couple of pix. Did you know Evertt, Alvah and the boys (I have a pic of them with their mom) were their own musical band? Also, there is a photo of Alvah at the Circleville POlice Station when he was on the force. He got a citation for helping catch the "Purple Gang" in the 30's. I will see about scanning and sending. If you ever saw the movie "The Untouchables" the role Sean Connery played is much like Alvah was as a policeman.
